Question, I just finished shaping up a couple of 6’10s. Both single fins, where should I place the box. I figure about 6 inches from the tail for the back of the box? Would that be about right? The fin boxes are both 7.5’s. Thanks for the input.

The fin boxes are both > 7.5’s. Thanks for the input… I think 6" is pretty close to standard, but not sure. You may want to check the archives for more onfo, I’m thinkin this was covered before. Hope you post your boards so we can have a look at them. Later, Scott.
AJL just shaped a 6’4" Single with a box.
The box on my 6’4" is 6" up from the tail. I like to use the 10" box. You have a bit more freedom experimenting with fin position and size. I usually position my fins further up in the box so if I had to use a 7.5" box, I might move it up a little more. Hope that helps. Good Luck!
AJL, Can you describe what fin(s) you’ve been using on the 6’4" how moving the fins up vs back effect the ride? Thanks, Swaylock
I put mine 5" up on my 6’10". It’s the long (10 1/2"?) fin box. AJL,>>> Can you describe what fin(s) you’ve been using on the 6’4" how moving > the fins up vs back effect the ride?>>> Thanks, Swaylock
Swaylock, I’ve been using two different fins on the 6’4". The first fin (shown in the board archive) is an 8.5" Fins Unltd Island. It’s a stiff, wide-based fin with lots of rake. I use this fin when the waves pick up and I need more drive and stability. I usually set it about 7.5" up from the tail. This setup seems to work best for late drops and long, extended bottom turns. I can also crank a hard cutback without worrying about the tail breaking free. The other fin I use with this board is a 9.0" Greenough Stage 4. This fin is foiled thin and has a nice snappy flex to it. I haven’t had a chance to try this fin in sizable surf but it’s been working ok in the small stuff. I slide this fin all the way to the top of the box so that the trailing edge is about 8.5" from the tail. I have a 6’6" egg that goes insane with this Greenough fin! The 6’4" is a fast, carving board. Not really built for grovelling. When I move the fin too far up it feels like I’m trying to force the board to be more of a hotdogger than it wants to be and it gets squirrley. This board works best in long, powerful waves where you can sink the board into a hard bottom turn, fly across sections, set your rail and do long, carving turns.
My fin box is 10 1/2" too. I think I said 10" in the previous post. Sorry.>>> I put mine 5" up on my 6’10". It’s the long (10 1/2"?) fin > box.
