1st time post, thought I’d see if anybody had any opinions on this. I typically ride classic longboards(unless conditions dictate otherwise), and one of my favorite 10’0’s has a fin box that is coming unseated(first 10’0 I’ve had with a finbox). So my question is this: after I route out the old fin box should I reseat a new one or glass on a fin instead. I am hesitant to put another box in cuz I think the surface area of the fin (a 10 inch pivot) is to blame for the stress, and I’m afraid it’ll just happen again. I’ve talked to a couple glassers and one recommended a windsurfing fin box, which has more surface area. Any thoughts?
Maybe better to route in a couple of mini-stringers like Bruce Jones does on some of his longboards. The Chinook boxes with the notches do provide more surface area for resin bonding but equally critical is the seam where the resin meets the foam. It can still pull away at that point. In fact most if not all the box repairs I’ve done weren’t because the resin had pulled away from the box… more like foam crushed or torn along the sides of the box with the whole resin plug pulling out along with the box.
Side and front and back woodies, post thru to deck!
Windsurf finboxes can be strong enought to hold fine with 23" long fins…overkill…
