Fin box repair filler vs foam

Quick question,

I busted a future fin box on my board. The box is gone as well as a little bit of foam. From what I’ve red in a couple places in the archives, it seems to be the best plan to route out a bigger hole, replace with a new block of foam, and then reroute the box hole in the new foam.

Can you achieve the same strength if you filled the hole with silcell/lam mixture and then route the fin box hole in that?

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks!

Hi Larry, that would work, but it might be easier to “dutchman” (plug) in a piece of foam. If you have a denser foam than the blank, that plug would have the least effect on the board. Put a patch of glass over the repair. You can use regular wood glue to fit the plug of foam in. Good luck. You probably already knew this.

ps. What in the heck did you hit? Hope it wasn’t a Honu/Turtle.

Nah,

I clipped a rock on the inside while coming in. Tide was high (not high enough I guess) and I was working to get as far in as possible so I wouldn’t have to do the “rock dance” further than I needed to. Bad choice :frowning:

Thanks for the heads up! When you said, “put a patch of glass over the repair” you are referring to after putting in the foam but before routing the new hole?

That is: I’d be routing the new hole once the whole is filled and glassed again, then I’d drop in the plug with lam res, then cap it with glass again, hotcoat, sand down back to the box.

Hey Larry, I would follow the initial Pro Box installation instructions once the plug is glued. Route, then set box. Tape over the box and put a glass patch over the box after it is set. No need to glass before box is set. This under the glass is much a stronger method. Some guys fill the box with clay. I find the tape easy to cut with the glass once it has turned tacky. Use a utility razor blade and don’t pull up glass to cause de-lamination. Make sure the cut is all the way through. The tape will peel with the little glass strip.
