Fin boxes in 2lb EPS

Hey Guys

I know a lot of people her on sways swear by HD inserts for fin boxes in EPS.

The last board I did, I didn't have any HD foam for inserts.

So, what i did was drill 2 small holes through to the deck lam for each box.

I then filled with my resin mix and installed the boxes as normal.

I was a bit conserned with it trapping air in the holes but when I drilled the hole you could see them from the deck side.

After install, you couldn't see them.

They have held up quite well so far.

Has anyone done this method and had problems with it?

Cheers

I learned that 2lb EPS foam is often 1.75lb foam. I learned that Epoxy Resin does this thing called Exotherm. I learned that people doing HD inserts are working with very low grade foam. I got quality foam and learned about Exotherm. Resin Research came out with Kwick Kick resin. I still do two pours. I line the box holes with 6 oz cloth. No more melt downs. No more problems over here.

Hey Stingray

Yer i did it that way too.

Poured enough to fill the drilled holes and just cover the bottom of the box hole.

Lined with 6 oz cloth on the bottom and around the walls and wet out.

Set the boxes and did another 2 pours.

No problems with the install.

Just wondering if they will hold up.

So far so good.

Cheers

I haven’t had any problems with Futures or FCS Fusions boxes installed straight into 2lb. and 1.5lb EPS. The boards have double 4oz. bottom lams though (stringerless).

I put proboxes directly in the 1.5 and above with just the standard recommended patches and roving.

two pours in quick succession. no hurries, no worries.
