fin boxes thickness problem

…Hi guys, when i have put fin boxes in thrusters, i´d go with F U boxes, but this time ive got a couple of boys who wants real thinner (thickness) tails, so the 1´ depth of the F Unlim. boxes exceed the desired thickness…to achieve the measurements…

…may be some of yours have the right choice…

thanks

Reverb: The FU boxes I get from Fiberglass Hawaii nowadays have little tabs to help set 'em into the rounted board. However, they didn’t use to have these. The point is that you can set the FU box to any depth you want, just be aware of the consequential gain or loss in potential stability.

There has been a lot of discussion lately about whether FCS plugs are sufficiently strong. The most cogent comment I saw was to the effect that “there are no bad systems, only bad installs”. That is, a FCS plug which is anchored to the DECK GLASS as well as the bottom glass, will be strong enough.

Similarly, if you’re working with a thin tail, try set the FU box full depth, so that it is anchored to both deck and bottom glass. That will be the strongest possible installation. Grind off the excess that sticks out the bottom.

One last note: an extra layer of glass, particularly around the forward end of the FU box, will add some strength where it’s going to be needed. If/when you run over a rock with a thin board and FU box, the whole tail can (and will!) break off at the forward edge of the box. Wanta ask my how I know? Log Cabins, coming out of a fine little tube, ran over a rock, there goes the tail. Only my third wave that morning. Pau surf!

Go with a different fin system. Futures has 1/2" tail boxes. Or you could tell them that the tail has to be x" thick for the fin box. As a last resort you could sand down the outside of the rear end of the box before mounting.

ofishl 10.5" boxs are about 3/4 inch deep so this may help u .

Let it stick out into the deck! So what, you don’t stand that far back on a single or semi gun anyways. Glass over it 6 layers, stronger than anything, capped and cap the bottom too.

…thanks to everyone

…LeeDD if i ll go through the deck what i do with the stringer…i finish with out stringer in the deck…

…these shapes are 5 7, 5 9, 5 10, 6 2, etc,

…the guys put their rear foot really in the tail…,about a finger from the end…so there s the problem…cause you need to mount the box really close to the tail, to achieve a wide range of fin movement…
