fin core material

i don/t know if this is any use to anyone or even if the material is the same outside the uk but i found some off cuts of pvc facia board and pvc trim for finishing off around pvc windows at work, the facia was 9mm and the trim 6mm really light, stiff and strong so i thought about making some fins from it . i have only used it as a core with 2 layers of 6oz carbon cloth and one layer of 4oz glass either side but they have come out really light in that they float on water ,i hav/nt finished them of as yet but will post some pics when i do

Hey Pete,

Just put enough spine strength and shell strength and you’ll have a real light fin that’ll perform beautifully.

If you you’re going to use them in a fin box you’ll have to beef up the base. If you glassing them on it’s no sweat as long as you have enough structural integrity built into the three shear walls that hold the fin together.

Epoxy is better but if you just increase the spine thickness a little polyester works fine.

You’ll get a real stiff fin if you do it right.
