I just finished a board with glassed on tri fins. Works great but I get > some fin humm at hight speeds. Whats the fix? Most often caused by water turbulance around the fins - may want to revisit the sanding work in the fin layup – even at the base. Small imperfections can have more effect than you may expect. Check the trailing edge for flat spots or a bead of resin from the gloss. Trailing edge must be perfect. If that doesn’t work you have a problem with the foil. aloha p.s. sometimes a fin hums because it doesn’t know the words!

What does it hurt? I just got a custom made board with glassed in fins and it hums at high speeds. Outside of the noise, is there anything to worry about.

Mike, As posted previously, fin hum typically is caused by irregularities in the trailing edge. One thing we have found is that if the trailing edge is greater than .060", there will be a much greater chance it will hum. The greater the velocity of water flow over the fin the more likely it will hum as well. There is typically nothing structurally wrong with a fin that hums. But, it does mean that there is a minute amount of turbulence causing the fins to vibrate. The turbulence initiates a harmonics (or back & forth movement). Look very closely at the trailing edge of your fins. If the taper to the trailing edge is not constant (or there is a rise in the middle of the taper) sand it out and try it again.
Just curious…has anyone experienced any sort of fin hum with glass - on “proteck”(sp.) fins ? (ones that have been properly aligned, that is). T.
