Hey guys,
I’ve done as much searching as I think I can using the words “fin making”. It seems strange to me that their would be no info on this forum in regards to this.
A few posts that I did find mentioned that the process was either too hard, or the end result to brittle.
Surely the mighty Swaylockians would not let such minor issues sway them from perfecting this process.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, or at least shatter my dreams.
thanks Stevo.
fin construction is not that hard…just lay up around 36 layers of fiberglass for a longboard fin and 24 i think for shortboard, then foil and sand…check this thread out http://www.swaylocks.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=177263;search_string=laying%20up%20fins;#177263
Thanks Dr,
Can’t see how I missed that on the searches, but that’s certainly gpt me moving onto this weekends project.
Converting board # three, a 6’ 3"-19"-2 1/2" that was left a little too thick and sharp on the underneath rail to really cut it as a thruster, (as well as the two disasterous efforts at fin plugs) into a 2 + 1 with fin box at the rear.
Cheers,
stevo
gday stevo
this is my second attempt
cut out of a piece of balsa plywood which i glassed together.
shaped them with some sandpaper and glassed them…
bert_burger has a good post on plywood fins and also sabs did one on balsa fins
mine are fat fins
you will notice the leading edge is glass as shown in berts post
i found these quite easy to make in epoxy resin
they are lighter than 1 plastic fin and seem quite strong and stiff to me
i glassed them on to save weight and have seen a lot of fcs plugs that have pulled out, and i have trouble getting other fin systems in NZ
cheers
Hi Stevo !
there is a thread by Bert Burger [entitled “wood fins” , or ‘making wood fins’, from memory ?]… it has excellent step by step photos, and commentary …very very helpful !!
