I’m just getting into shaping and have finished a few new boards. Since I’ve gotten into shaping, my biggest problem has been fin placement. I look at other boards to get an idea, I ask other people, and I have never have gotten a difinitive answer. Does the length of the board, tail rocker, width, concave, and V play any part in placing fins? Does having fins further forward make the board more stable? I will welcome any info on this subject because I spent many hours shaping and glassing and I still can’t try out my new boards. Thanks, jack wolf

I entered fin placement and was rewarded with many threads to review. I tried ‘Placement’ and it narrowed the search considerably. There are many Pros’ and Backyard Bros’ who share on this site. Welcome. Thanks, Jeff Jeff, think of it this way. The more rocker a shape has the straighter forward the fins can be placed. With a real flat tail rocker the more toe the fins will need. A flat board will ride on the botton more than on the rail, so it needs more toe. As far as caster, I personally like the tips tilted out quite a bit, It feels like the fin is more vertical when the board is in a hard turn. Anyway that’s my take on it. http://www.JimtheGenius@aol.com Messages In This Thread fin placement basics (views: 93) JR – Wednesday, 11 July 2001, at 8:11 p.m. Re: fin placement basics (views: 80) SURFHUNGRY – Thursday, 12 July 2001, at 6:31 a.m. Re: fin placement basics (views: 69) bruce – Thursday, 12 July 2001, at 9:45 a.m. Re: fin placement basics (views: 62) Alaska – Thursday, 12 July 2001, at 10:16 a.m. Re: fin placement basics (views: 50) Jim Phillips – Saturday, 14 July 2001, at 9:07 a.m. Re: fin placement basics (views: 51) Jim Phillips – Saturday, 14 July 2001, at 8:31 a.m. View Thread | Return to Index | Read Prev Msg | Read Next Msg Swaylock’s Surfboard Design Discussion Forum Archive is maintained by Swaylock with WebBBS 4.33.
