fin placement

I have searched and searched the archives and I can’t find anything clear cut. I have a 9’6" 19"x23"x14.5"x3.25" with a 2+1 set up. If I have the side fins (fcs) in what will the board do if I put the center box fin up in the box and what will it do if I put it back in the box. which way will make it turn better and which way will make it looser? Thanks

if you move the fin up you will be able to turn better. however you lose a little bit of drive and power. Moving the fin back will make it a little harder to turn but you will have the speed. personally i like the fin back a little more. i’ve found that if you move it up too much it tends to slide out. another plus to moving the fin back is that it makes the board more stable. hope that helps a little. of course… this is just my opinion… it depends on the individual for how you surf and what you like to do. if you want to turn, move it up a little, if you want to noseride, move it back.

with a long box in the middle and a couple of different sized center fins, you can have a whole lot of fun experimenting. I play with a 4.75" and a 7" in different positions.

That is exactly the info I was looking for…THANKS>>> if you move the fin up you will be able to turn better. however you lose a > little bit of drive and power. i thought of a few more things to say about the fins… since you have the tri-fin setup, you’re going to turn better anyway, so you might want to move it back a little more. the tri-fins also hold the board a little higher in the wave, so noseriding and stuff like that shouldnt be any harder if you were to move the fin up. also, a smaller fin will turn easier, but it runs the risk of sliding out, you also dont get as much drive. on my boards i like a big, long single fin moved way back and that’s it.
