fin placement

i know most of you guys already have a list of what works for you but i just came upon this. let me know what you think. i retained this out of a surfboard book. also any equations anyone would have for fin placement would be a great help also. thanks, Josh FIN PLACEMENT: single fins: 6.5"-10.5" from tail twin fins: 9.5"-12" from tail tri fins side: 10.5"-12.5" from tail middle: 2.75"-3.75" from tail

i dont think that info is necessarily true, it just depends on the board and how you want it to ride. i suppose it might work as a general estimate or guideline of fin placement, however i would not stick to it religiously by any means. for example i have a single fin 3 inches up, i have a twin fin 7 inches up, etc. it might work as a rough idea of where to place the fins, but don’t be afraid to stray from those measurements. -steve>>> i know most of you guys already have a list of what works for you but i > just came upon this. let me know what you think. i retained this out of a > surfboard book. also any equations anyone would have for fin placement > would be a great help also. thanks, Josh>>> FIN PLACEMENT: single fins: 6.5"-10.5" from tail twin fins: > 9.5"-12" from tail tri fins side: 10.5"-12.5" from > tail>>> middle: 2.75"-3.75" from tail

Are these measurements taken from the fin where it’s in contact with the board or instead from the center the fin’s area ? If measurements are from the fin’s base, then is it from the center or the rear end ? Pierre

fim measurements are typically taken from the trailing edge of the fin

fim measurements are typically taken from the trailing edge of the fin McTavish and I put our thruster fins up 6"& 16" and our tri-fins 20"(rear of fin) & 10"(front of fin). All work well.

So we have some Ideas of distance from tail to the trailing edge. How far apart or how far from the stringer for a twin or a thruster. Sort of more interested in a twin setup. Is the basic toe in based on a line drawn towards the mid of the nose?? What about cant (the angle off verticle)?? Questions… questions…
