I just finished shaping a 6’10 17 x 21.5 x 15.5 stingered swallowtail hybrid shape (how’s that for a mouthful). It is roughly fashioned after an enlarged (and bastardized) MR twin fin (if that helps imagining). Anyway, I’m wondering about putting a quad fin set up on it instead of the “traditional” twin fin arrangement. Thing is, I put a moderate single-to-double concave in the bottom. Should I go for it, or go with a thruster or twin set up and play it safe? If anyone has suggestions, lemme know por favor…
Attached is a little pic of a similar board that I shaped. The problem here is that the shaped blank in question is already over at Moonlight.
So, 3 obvious differences are: 1) length (the board in the pic is a 7’10"), 2) the “stinger” is placed 13" from the tail on the new shape (the board pictured has stinger placement at 16"). Finally, 3) the new shape has a somewhat pointy nose.
The wings will hell with trackin some but the board will probably need more holding power than just rail fins will give it. The bottom is going to make want to release so a Quad set-up could be a good call. There are some quad fishes in resources here on the site that you could model the set-up
after.
Consider a good strong rail fin system like Red-X, Future, or Lokbox for the lead fins. You could put three FCS plugs in for the trailers and then you could move them fore and aft depending in the conditions. I think the trailers should be double foiled.
Yo Rich, thanks for the beta. I’m having trouble uploading photos 'cause my file sizes are too big. This attachment seems to work, but it is a quiver photo so it doen’t show the board in question up close.
Oh well. (Halcyon & Chips) Hey guys, take a look at the board at the far left in the attachment below - I guess it’s like a shrunken-down version of that…
ET Surf / Pat Ryan shaped 7’6" Kingfish. Stinger begins approx. 20" from tail. 5" fin base, 6" deep. 4" center fin, 8" slot in box. End of box 4" from inside of tail.
