fin set up table like bruce mckee's

here is the link for bruce mckee’s quad set up. http://www.mckeesurf.com/brucemckee/multisystem.htm

i was wondering if anyone knew of anyhting even remotely similar to this for thrusters and tri-fins. im still a newby and dont want to copy other board designs anymore. even if someone could lead me to a place i could find the theory and make a table myself. thanks.

Table - too little variability to justify a table.

Fins at 10.5 and 3.5 toed 1/4" and canted 4-6 degrees set with rear edge 1 1/8" in from rail.

If the tail is narrow move the rail fins up 0.25-0.5 inches.

Spread the cluster up to 8 inches for big wave guns.

Reduce the toe in 1/16" on banana rocker boards or guns.

Reduce the cant to 4 degrees on guns.

That is all.

truth is, there is no “magic formula”.

different boards on different waves will perform differently with different fin positioning.

what’s best to one, may not be best to another.

what’s best for you, is trial and error.

get a fin system with some adjustability – like ProBox. the ability to move the fins fore and aft in the box will really let you play around with the fin cluster.

no one can tell you what you like but you.

as for McKee’s thoughts on quads – not my cup of tea. but that’s not to say that plenty of other people don’t swear by it.

find what ya dig…and dig it.

Surf3184, I call our multisystem “VERSA-PLANE” which in simple term is a SWISS ARMY KNIFE SURFBOARD. A board with this set-up can turn into a number of things with few fins which can save the end user alot of money. Not to mention that you can also adjust your board to the surf condition of the day and in prove on your surfing skills. This board his over 36 fin set-ups with only 1 set of Tri Fins, 1 set Side Bites, and Twin fins. Soulstice is right about using ProBox.

Surf3184, Here’s a more extreme VERSA-PLANE set-up by Matt Calvanti on a Bing board.

What do you do if by exsperience on a certin board size 14 front and 4 1/2 rear works the best?

Different templates need different placements to work best.

Tables dont work.

In the water testing does.

…I agree with sunsetpoint and add that the cluster position depends on the surfer position (vertical) too, where he put their feet

most important, the back one and the interaction with the tail rocker

I also agree with sunsetpoint which is why I use and promote Probox to expand on the existing fin set-up, because every person has a different feel and condition to what may work for them. That includes positioning and cant.

versa\plane

love it:)

this is definitely going on my next personal board

What is working for me is starting at 6’ on a 7’ i move the front fins 1/2"forward at 8’ its 1 1/4" forward of the 6" and at 9" its 3 1/4" forward of the 6’

This is what works and you can see it would be hard to make table or formula to fit these findings.

One of the top shapers here had a table and it kept the spread the same through all sizes.

This does not work as boards get longer but he was such a great shaper it became law to many.

I personal Thank You goes out to Sunsetpoint/Greg Griffin and company for the 5 fin inspiration. I love them. Ive got a long time high school buddy who lives on Oahu…I told him to add a five finner to his quiver and give you a call for his next board. Unfortunately, he got a staff infection in his arm last year from all the nasty South Shore water and plays more golf then surf now. But Im still trying to get him to bite.
