I’ve been searching the forums for some posts about single fin eggs, but all I’ve gotten were eggs over 6’6. The board is going to be used for head high and under mostly, any suggestions on what kind of fin to get? I have some what of an idea, but I dont plan on spending money on a fin without some solid suggestions. thanks!
Is it possible the width and shape of the egg, as well as the weight of the rider and his skill surfing would impact your answer. Also the waves to be surfed and the rider’s preference for edge hold vs easy turning?
the board is 6’0 - 20 1/2’’ - 2 1/2’’
looks kind of like http://www.tomneilsonshapes.com/used.html if you scroll down to the 6’0" Retro Egg. It is slightly thinner than that model, but its epoxy.
I’m about 5’11 160lbish, probably used to ride some point break type waves in santa cruz, pleasure point, the hook/sharks, and used to easy turning, not too much speed to out run the shoulder significantly.
Are you using a box?
If you are the true ames has a wide variety of fins
The best fin I ever rode in a board like that was a olive green custom made Liddle fin given to me by the Vaqueros. It had a very thick base and unreal flex, it was very greenough inspired. Along those same lines the greenough 4a has been really good to me. I buy the 4a’s not only because they work but also because from what i have read george pretty much invented that sort of fin, therefore i like giving him some credit. Darren
ps. when in doubt move the fin all the way up in the box.
For frontside in smaller surf, you could get away with about an 8" fin if the tail is narrower than about 15"…
For bigger surf, like head high and moving fast, better consider a 9’er.
Since I’m goof and surf those kinds of board backside lots, 9.5 to 10.5 is my choice of fin sizing, but I’m really a tri fin rider and back foot oriented.
Kelp beds like to eat up long single fins, so that’s certainly a consideration.
Personally, I don’t believe in make and model, rather prefer to go by length, basewidth, and swept.
The “thick” you guys are referring to is actually the base/chord width, not the true thickness of the fin…
hey darren, who’s it going??? just to clarify about that fin i gave ya…it’s one of my design( a lttle bit of liddle with some greenough as well).it was designed for a specific 7’2" hull, hence the tad wider base and thicker, rounded foil.it was foiled by paul gross.i have one more blank just like it waiting to be foiled…glad you like that fin. i imagine it has heaps of power in it…
