Fin vibrations

Finally got my 70’s hobie single fin out into some overhead surf (thanks Frances) saturday and on the first bottom turn the board was making so much noise I souned like a train going down the line. I didn’t notice alot of drag or even feel much vibration it was just pretty loud. I’ve been reading the archives and it sounds like I need to start by re-foiling the fin… correct? Should I not ride it until this is fixed?

There seems to be no problems with some vibration. Rode a cooperfish that howled like a banshee, but no performance problems. From what I have read and been told there is no rush to repair(if it ain’t broke…), there is very little chance of breakage. I like the sound, makes me feel faster.

With a leading edge bump you get a whistle.

With a trailing edge bump you get a hum.

With a trailing edge that is too thick you get a hum.

Most hums/whistles can be fixed in five minutes with some sandpaper.

My 6’8" x 20 gets a loud “HONK” when I go backside, so it’s the starboard fin, prolly both edges.

On lefts, it just hums nicely, no prob.

Doesn’t all the noise soon enough vibrate and cause some damage?

It pissed off a couple of logboarders at Cabrillo St. today at 10AM.

On another note, Beach Chalet had about 12 empty tables. No waiting line, they said it’s be “40-45 minutes” to seat the two of us.

A foursome came in next, and the wait was “one hour to a little more”

That place sucks!

No, we of course, took everyone, including the next two couples, and left!

…sometimes the vibrations happen cause the fins have got a few sheets of fibers…

What is “few sheets of fibers”?

I know the leading and trailing edges have blunt spots, and lumps.

Talking glasson tri, all fins need two layers of fiberglass to fair out the rope.

Thanks for the info guys. On closer inspection I believe its the leading edge. Seems a bit blunt and has the odd bump here and there. I’ll let ya know if and when I solve the problem.

…Leedd, some “shops” made fins with really a few layers of cloth, about 3 to 6 !!! then thick with resin !!
