Finalising #001 design. Comments, please!

Doug

YEP keep it simple, 3mm and 5mm sounds fine dont forget if it feels a bit flexi an extra glass strip on the rails makes quite a difference with this type of construction .

I wouldnt go any thicker, with a light rider it could feel quite stiff,if it was me i would go thinner 2 " or less but you are best to stay on the safe side with this one.

A broken board is not a good start, I would add thu ive got them pretty light now and i still havnt managed to break one yet !(its not for a lack of trying)

Its best for you now to explore this type of struture and get a feel for it, make this one so it lasts and it will set you up to make decisions for the next.

The evolution trail as you make this one will tell you a lot!!

Mike

G’day Mike,

Thanks for that. Yeah, that’s the way I am looking at it - the evolution trail thing. I am going to keep it simple and get it right before I change something. Then get THAT right before I change something else. At least until I am happy that I have gotten a feel for it.

With no more gilding of the lilly and no further ado, here is my revised (and modest) plan:

SHAPE: length and width unchanged, 2.5" at thickest point, rounded out tail, placed fins in final positions (inc sidebites), finalised rails (I think), completely flattened bottom.

CONSTRUCTION: 2lb EPS, epoxy (probably BoteCote - don’t ask), unwrapped balsa rails, 5mm preformed deck (standard wood orientation), 3mm preformed bottom (standard wood orientation), 4oz under skins, 6oz over skins.

The ONLY thing I was unsure of was whether to add a springer on the neutral plane - because I was concerned about it being floppy. The point about adding extra glass to the rails if that happens solves that one for me - thanks!

BRD file attached for anyone with APS3000 who wants a more detailed look. Also attached the APS300 generated report for lazier readers

Thanks again to everyone who has shared their opinions and feedback - it’s been really useful and greatly appreciated. And thanks nim advance for any additional comments to come!

Sorry to pop this thread. I did consider doing a new one, but thgought keeping it all togethor in a single thread might be better…

I should be pre-forming skins soon and not long after that I’ll be cutting the rocker profile. And there’s no going back from there.

This is overdue, but sometimes life intrudes. What I have been able to do in the meantime is get a better understanding of deck concaves and try to incorporate them into this design.

As usual any and all comments would be most welcome. I’d particularly appreciate feedback on:

  • the transition between 11" and 1’ (it’s bugging me!).

  • rail profile.

  • concave profile.

If you are shy about commenting on here feel free to PM me.

For those not already using it (you probably just got let out of your basement prison) this is an APS3000 board file which you can launch from here.

Cheers,

Hi All,

Not just a gratuitous pop of an old, dead, thread. Thought I might keep a bit of a step-by-step on here, so this is just an update.

I finally got past the technical difficulties, the tests and other preliminaries & difficulties and got the bottom skin into the bag on the weekend! Yay! Stoked!

Needless to say I now hate chasing down leaks in the bag

Anyway, some happy snaps for those who care…

Looking towards the nose… You can see the vac setup in the background.

Looking towards the tail. The Yellow timber is how I finally got the bag opening sealed… That and lots of Blutack!

Another shot from tail to nose.

Vac setup pulling air… Note lots of Blutack… But not nearly as much as on the bag

If anyone’s interested I’ll post some shots of it out of the skin out of the bag tomorrow.

Cheers!

Yeah, Doug, keep this one going… nobody’s above learning something new
