Finally, my first build thread!

Thanks for the kind words. Europe indeed, the room you’re seeing however is just the only one with enough space I can work in. Happens to be our cellar for the heating; hence all the piping and such.

I did take down the board a little further to get all the little gouges out and it is ready to glass. I have 3 blanks, so I will shape them all before I glass them.

You’re stoked Sidiabed!

It’ll go for sure!

Next one will be better

Not that I want to flood the forum with all my threads again, but after I had a go at #3, I’ll take another turn at my little fatty here. I have a feeling, that I could take away just a little bit more foam in the nose and tail area. Just a tad though, I’ll leave the rest untouched.

Hopefully starting glassing tomorrow!

Yay, just glassed the bottom of my fatty. I chickened around and took what felt like forever to set everything up, but once I poured the epoxy on the board, everything felt fine.

RR really is a dream to work with. Well, at least that’s my impression after this first experience. I wasn’t too precise with my relieve cuts, but I even had time to retrim them and put them in place.

Looking forward to glassing the deck and my other 2 projects.

Me again…

I just glassedteh deck and it went just as well as the bottom. Where I still need practice though are the areas of tail and nose. However, my other 2 boardshave pretty different nose and tail shapes than fatty here. We’ll see.

Oh and I still I already improved on the amounts of resin I need. I applied LeMats formula, which gave me enough resin for the bottom yesterday. Today I thought I’d need 900 ml for the deck. My measuring cup only goes up to 600 ml so I thought I’d use that and mix some more for the laps. Turned out that was jsut the right amount.

I’ll spend the rest of the day with foiling some fins for this one and apply the hotcoat tomorrow.

This realls is so much fun, from thinking about what might work, what won’t, coming up with different ideas, finally shaping the blank and now glassing it. The only negative aspect would be, that I didn’t start earlier to give this a try.

Hey guys, again I am in need of some help.

I took a close look at my fatty here and it seemed I didn’t do that good of a glassing job after all, especially the tail doesn’t look alright. And I made a total mess when wrapping the laps over the rails apparently. Also, I am not really sure if I flattened out the lapline enough as there will be only one more coat now.

Anyone?

Anyone?

I used the time yesterday do foil some fins, but I’d like to finish this one now.

Can I hotcoat the board as is or would that yield unsightly results? More sanding? I am afraid to sand into the coth though. What about those ugly spots at the tail?

Don’t worry about those ugly spots. The hotcoat will mask them.

Thanks Hans, that’s a relief.

I will glass on my fins then and finish my first board today, yay!

they are not that bad at all, have a look at my thread there are some bad laps there.

but yours are sweet.

ive seen the work in shops that are just as bad, good sand between that stage and the filler coat and you will be dancing.

is it finished yet…?

Hey sk8ment, sadly not, no. Thanks for your interest though. I ran into some trouble with my van, which had to be taken care of first. And are still taken care of for that matter, so that’s where all my free time goes.

I should be able to finish my boards this weekend though.

did you see the other comment?

your laps and the small little bubbles are quite small impefections really.

great job.

Thanks man, really appreciate it. Yeah I saw those, I’ll just leave the board alone and to the fill coat when I have time.

The bottom lam on my fish came out much nicer and cleaner than on this one. I’ll take and share pics this coming weeks.

You know… with a tiny bit of judicious filing/sanding and perhaps a patch or two if needed it won’t be bad at all.  Try applying a couple drops of mixed resin resin on any bubbles or air pockets and rub it in with a gloved finger.  Also try a light cheater coat - just brush on some mixed  resin over any areas of pin air and squeegee it in from different directions.  I’ll bet most, if not all, of those pin air bubbles will fill right in.

I think you’ll find big improvement and then you can apply filler coat.  If after applying your filler coat everything looks too lumpy/bumpy apply a second filler coat ASAP.  I know of people who double fill coat routinely.

I actually wanted to fill coat today and tomorrow, but last night I said fuck it and did the fill coat on all my boards. Such a great feeling. I think it turned out ok.

My question now is, can I just leave them as they are? I actually prefer that matte finish of sanding, I am afraid though that I might ruin the boards. Plus, I only have 200 gr of epoxy left, which is nowhere nere enough to apply a second coat on 3 boards.

Also, how do people get the “bowtie-ends” of their resin leash loops so clear? Or do I just have to much cloth there? I added two patches, as I was afraid for strength/durability.

Turns out, I still got around 500 grams of epoxy left. Would that be enough for a second thin layer of fill coat?

I would really appreciate some input as I’d love to finish the boards before the weekend. So light sanding by hand, which grit do I start with? around 100? After that, a last thin layer? Do I sand that too?

I guess I need another layer as here and there are spots, where I still see the pattern of the glass.

Thanks guys, this will be my last question.

No recommendations?

I gotta get this done today, so I’ll just go ahead and do the following: I’ll sand down the tape line and any uneven sports with 100-120, then go over the entire board with 150 and a sponge. I’ll clean the board afterwards and apply a second, thin hotcoat. If that is nicer, I’ll just leave it, if not, I’ll start that one with higher grits.

Bad idea? Good idea? whatever?

The level of finish is a personal choice, anywhere from showroom polish to adequate for surfing, it’s your call. The board looks good, hope you can follow up with some beach shots and ride report. Good job!
