Quick question - anyone know the back-of-the-finbox measurement for v-bottom longboards?
I’ve made a 10’2 with rolled vee in the tail.
Normally, I like finboxes (and fins, of course) pretty far back. 5" from end of the finbox to the tail on a square/squash, 5.5" on a round pin. And those are usually fairly practical limits as well, as past that the tail tends to be too thin to route a 1" deep hole…
This v-bottom, though, is plenty thick which would ordinarily inspire me to go back to 4-4.5" or so…but I thought I remembered that v-bottoms like the fin farther forward than normal and I don’t want to limit the front placement, if that’s the right call.
But that’s counter-intuitive as well, as v-bottoms are looser rail-to-rail, which seems as if it would be amplified by a forward fin placement… I don’t want to make it driveless… but I don’t have a 15" box to use.
Any thoughts? Photo is after hotcoat but before sanding, etc…
On my 10-2 with “flat paneled V”, 16" wide tail, I put he box at 4.5". Never used a single fin all the way back or all the way up. I have found. for what its worth, V bottom boards seem to go rail to rail better with the fins back a little. Keeps the “drive” lets the “V” do its job.
Try checking with Dennis Ryder. He’s still shaping boards like the Blue Machine that had/have similar bottoms (I say from my 35 years ago memory - and I want another B.M.).
