Finbox placement for v-bottom longboards?

Quick question - anyone know the back-of-the-finbox measurement for v-bottom longboards?

I’ve made a 10’2 with rolled vee in the tail.

Normally, I like finboxes (and fins, of course) pretty far back. 5" from end of the finbox to the tail on a square/squash, 5.5" on a round pin. And those are usually fairly practical limits as well, as past that the tail tends to be too thin to route a 1" deep hole…

This v-bottom, though, is plenty thick which would ordinarily inspire me to go back to 4-4.5" or so…but I thought I remembered that v-bottoms like the fin farther forward than normal and I don’t want to limit the front placement, if that’s the right call.

But that’s counter-intuitive as well, as v-bottoms are looser rail-to-rail, which seems as if it would be amplified by a forward fin placement… I don’t want to make it driveless… but I don’t have a 15" box to use.

Any thoughts? Photo is after hotcoat but before sanding, etc…

I’m no help on the fin placement, but I like what you’ve done with the pigment! It looks like you figured out a few more techniques since Sugar’ 1

Thanks mainly to Leslie at FattyFiberglass for the insipration & to Austin for practical advice…

And I bet Stingray will like the colors

Howzit Benny, You could buy a 15" box from Bahne and solve all your problems.Aloha,Kokua

Sugar!

I love the colors. Yes, I grew up in the seventies ,wore bell bottoms ,had long hair, even went to a few Greatful Dead concerts.

Keep up the good work

Ray

On my 10-2 with “flat paneled V”, 16" wide tail, I put he box at 4.5". Never used a single fin all the way back or all the way up. I have found. for what its worth, V bottom boards seem to go rail to rail better with the fins back a little. Keeps the “drive” lets the “V” do its job.

Perfect, ACE - exactly what I was hoping  Thanks!

More Union Jackmaica photos to come, once its glossed & polished.

Benny,

Try checking with Dennis Ryder. He’s still shaping boards like the Blue Machine that had/have similar bottoms (I say from my 35 years ago memory - and I want another B.M.).
