Finmakers, Have a Look - Cardboard Fin Experiment

Us Wozzies like trying different things as you may be well aware. This is my latest evil experiment attempting to lay up a flexi fin for the Moonrocket.

There is an environmental aspect to this as well with recycled board skin and a cardboard core used.

The layup for the first half is 1 x 5oz, 1 x carbon fibre, 2 x 5oz 2/3 length, 2 x 5oz 1/3 length, 1 x 5oz full length, then the cardboard core, then reverse the layup for the rest.

All this was put onto a piece of recycled board skin taped up to form a dam with another going on over the top after all the glass was wetted out. I used 150g of epoxy for this one.

I had to cover up the edges of the cardboard with tape so the resin didn’t get inside the corrugations.

More info when the epoxy sets.

Comments, questions?

This should show the layup a bit better.

Using the old board skin as the external layer is great because most of the finishing work has already been done…

You guys will try anything! Full marks for effort.

If it’s going to be a box fin, make sure you have a bit extra reinforcing in the bottom few inches, sorry centimeters. (the local measuring is getting to me)

Also good to see the carbon to stiffen it up. I hope you’re using epoxy.

Yeah Wildy, I only use epoxy. When it comes to boxing it up I’ll be wrapping the whole base in 5oz (cos that’s all I got) extending up the sides about 2.54cm.

Should be interesting, as it’s only been 1 deg C (35 deg F) here during the nights so I’m expecting it to be set in maybe 2-3 days…unless I can talk Jo into letting me put it inside the house where it’s nice and warm…

The Wozzies are at it again - you guys are freaks !!!

Must be reaaallll good beer in the West !!!

it will probably get WORSE , before it gets better !

Grant was talking about a cardboard SURFBOARD [“the card BOARD” ] last time I was there …

now , if you can just get Kelloggs to sponsor you , Grant …you’ll be SET !! [“Coco popouts”?? “fruity loopy boards” ? “honey [lip] smackers” , perhaps !!!] …the mind [or what’s LEFT of it ] BOGGLES !!

Hola,

Hixx, if you want a really flex fin I recommend to build it from chopped-mat glass (that one used for rough boat glassing).

My brother had a trifin which fins were made of this. They 3 were so flexy!! When you were paddling out and he was surfing the wave you were just passing over, you can literally listen them shout!!! People often asked me why my brother liked to shout while he was surfing…it was not him, it was the board!!! Very funny.

Hey Neira,

That’s an idea I’ll put to use sometime.

If you have a look at the piccies I cut the glass so the weave is aligned with the base, hopefully it’ll flex in 2 spots so it’ll be quite whippy.

The CF is about 30deg off line to strengthen the 5oz, with the weave all in one direction I thought it might shear at any point along that axis.

hi neira !

I made a few from chopped mat …hellish to lay up and sand …needed heaps of resin to wet it out . Dry spots in the lam …

like I said , I made a few chopped mat ones …compared to LOTS of regular glass , and wod and foam core fins .

I guess you don’t know till you try it , though …

Sat the fin out in the sun today, all cooked by 5pm.

Time to get cutting…

You can see from the edge on shot how it tapers towards the tip…

Ready for old Bertha the Belt Sander

It’s got about an inch to two inches of flex…this should be fun…

More later…take it easy…
