Finning a fish...

Hey Sways,

My friend just picked up a neat/weird looking fish thing yesterday at a yard sale. It’s 5’9’’ x 16 1/4’’ x 22’’ x 17 1/4’’ x thick, round tail, quad FCS plugs. It looks a lot like a knee board, just a bit long.

We took it out yesterday for a spin, but didn’t have much in the way of fins for it- we stuck FCS FG5 sidefins in the back, and FCS GAMs in the front. The board went ok, but it was weird to turn- a little skittish, not very smooth at all.

My feeling is that the right fins could really turn this board in to a fun summer ride, but I’m not sure what would be best. Swaylocks fish gurus can you give me a hand?

thanks.

So is it a fish or roundtail??? You said both. Pics??? i’m no guru, just curious.

pics…

looks like the back fins have too much toe. Usually on 4 finner’s the back fins have less toe than the front fins.

yep, i see that. obproud what would you do improve the ride? Run it as a twin from the front plugs? Any fin template suggestions?

hi adk !!

how far up from the tail are thosde back side fins [trailing edge]?

it may just be the angle of the photo , but they look far forward , to me !

personally , if it was my board , i’d put in back plugs for a back fin .

and run it as a single fin , with [smallish] side fins

but most people just write me off , so do what YOU want to do

it’s just my personal opinion [for what it’s worth] , but i think a wide tail board may need fairly deep fins to hold the skittery tail in …

Looks like a kneeboard to me. Its probably going to feel weird no matter how you fin it.

yep , that’s a fair comment , i reckon

my 'bushfire ’ fish ?

it started as a really wide kneeboard with a really fat arse square tail [a ‘slab’]

it went shithouse as a stand up board [not surprisingly]

but once it was stripped , reshaped narrower , well… it was MUCH better as a fish , for SURE !!

cheers !

ben

[incidentally …i reckon it went crap as a kneeboard , too …but then again , i am NOT peter crawford , either
