Fins that float...

Anyone ever tried fins that “float” : thick hollow fins (Pope) or foam cored (EPS/carbon fins)? How do these behaves ? I’ve just finished shaping a 8’ nugget-like (wide round tail) and am hesitating between a “Y” fin (starfin inspired) and a fully foiled fin (EPS/carbon/epoxy). Pierre.

Hi Pierre, For many years I have felt that light fins are an advantage. I built my first foam core fin back and glassed it on in the early ‘70s. I still have the board. It was my favorite for years. I do alot of experimenting with fins so I don’t surf single as much as I used to. I continue to use composite construction using carbon fiber/epoxy with foam and polyester lamination with great success. I think lighter fins make a board feel more alive and lighter in the water. If you have a single fin box in the board it would be good to have at least two fins for it. If you’re going with a glass-on I hope you hit it right the first time. It’ll be work to make things right if you don’t. There are a wide range of fins that will work on a board like yours. Your skill and the conditions you surf will dictate what’s best. I’m glad to suggest specific choice if you want to email me. Mahalo, Rich (Halcyon Custom Fins)
