does anyone use these fin boxes, the ones with the 4 tabs on the sides? i ran into a problem with the box today. i thought the tabs were supposed to sit on top of the routed slot. this would allow for the resin to fill in underneath the box, thus making a stronger box. but when i was sanding the box the tabs would sand off and leave small holes where resin wasn;t able to fill in. i know i can fix it, but it gets annoying when this stuff happens. any help?? also, do you guys set your fin box so that it pressed down to the bottom of the routed slot? or do you let it sit a little higher so as to make resin fill in the bottom?

Your problem is from not filling enough resin in the routed slot first. There needs to be sufficient resin to overflow while the box is being pushed down to the tabs. This is why the new boxes were designed with a lip around the top to keep the excess resin from inside, but taping it off is still recommeneded as practical and prudent. There should be a small space under the bottom of the box, so that resin covers all sides.
i put the box in a diff. way this time. the first few times were done in one step, pushing the box in until it overflowed. this time i set the box in with a little amount of resin just to hold it in place. i did this to get better results for straightness. then i would go back and fill the rest of the slot in with more resin, and letting it overflow. maybe i should do it the original way???
