fins

What is a good rule of thumb for thruster fin placement? I just did a retro fish and tail depth is 5 1/4’’ i put the back fin 3 1/4 and the front 11’’ with 1/4’’ toe I built this board for my son and im thinking they are to far forward its a 5 10 any advice will help thank you

those are right around pretty standard numbers for a thruster setup.

I do fins by eye mostly.   Every board is different depending on the shape, width etc..  Let the shape and you want the board to do determine the fin placement.  For toe I use a string line up to the nose of the board and decide how much I want to offset from the tip of the board.  Below is a 5'6 I just completed.  The back fin dot on this one was 3 1/8th off of the tail.  Toe in on this board was to a point about 1 1/2" off of the nose.

So, you measured your 3 1/4" for the back fin from the start of the butt crack?

That would put your rear fin at 8 1/2" from the tips of the tails?

That is probably too far. I’ve never put a center fin on a board with a deep crack so, maybe someone else with some experience can chime in but, that may be the reason why so many fishes are quads or twins.

Can you post a pic of the board?

That would help a lot.

I had somebody come and help me with it thank for the help

So, what’d you guys figure out???

yes, tow off the nose, not by 1/4" or whatever you said. tow in will be different by tail widths, fin placements and lengths, so its best to tow off the nose. good luck

whoops, double clicked

Because there are so many variations of small wave “High performance” short boards and “standard” boards these days

That is :-

Wide nose’s - narrow noses

wide point back - forward

wide tails - narrow tails

egg noses… etc etc etc

the variations seam to be endless…

I find it makes more sense to aim the toe of the fins to a desired point on the widest part of the board - Not necessarily the nose (as this will/might whack-distort things out if the board has a wide arse/nose or egg… and its aimed to an egg nose, thus, pulling the fins in in relation to the most important performance part of the a board, the back 2/3 rd)

that makes alot of sense. thanks

That’s good York,
