lookin good
just fare in the nose and finish the tail
maybe tune up the bottom
hi Ken,
i really appreciate your input on this one, especially after reading your posts.
ive put a slight concave running from the nose to about half way down the board then started fairing it out to a v around the fin. i need to set some lighting up on monday to finsh it off. im gonna get the other blank to the same point on monday night so i can tweak them on tuesday. the other will have a rounded rear end and planning to get it a bit thinner too.
off for a surf tomorow … woohoo were expecting about 3-4ft 10 second period no wind which is good for our spot!
ill try and get some piccies

Hey SD
looking good mate, those shaping stands are the job, wish I’d thought of that before knocking up my hefty wooden ones. What are they made of?
Just off out to the garage to finish sand mine before doing some art work then maybe glassing tomorrow. My cameras working again for some reason, I’ll post some pics later.
Peace!

I just use overhead lighting, My garage is too wide.
and I dont get to put walls up to make a real shaping bay
I have lights on each side overhead
What I do Is tilt the board up each side to check evenness
I also stand them on the tail and run my hands gently down the rails to feel for evenness
dont thin out the tail too much on the second board
you want a little volume to held grab the wave energy
jase the stands are just two pieces of blue dow styrofoam with a notch cut into then expanding PU glued to a piece of 12mm ply which clamps to a hieght adjustable table we have at work. the table is a bit wide but i can live with it for now. the blue foam still needs padding with something soft as i dinted the board in a few places. ive rounded the corners today but still needs padding before i do the next blank tomorow.
ken, ill be thinking of your thoughts tomorow when i fire the planer up again for number 2. i spent tonight after work putting the finishing touches to number 1 but i might still tweak it slightly once i have them both done. i took your suggestion on tilting it to see the shadows and im also bearing in mind that the the changes im now making could be done with resin, its just the perfectionist in me!
and heres one with a straight edge across the bottom
we had a nice bit of swell on sunday morning too and just to make jase jealous i thought id post a few snaps.
Cheers buddy, that really did it for me…weather looks nice aswell, yeah nice and cold!
Its all going good by the looks of things. I’m about to stick some colour on mine then its glassing time again.
The thread’s under “a fat lads first adventure in foam” if you feel like checking the progress.
Where were the pics taken?
Peace!
hey jase the pics are down hells mouth! it wasnt too bad on the temperature front… its defo on the way up and im looking forward to 4 days in cornwall this coming weekend!
ive checked your thread ill post my comments over there!

yep i had a few holes near the tail so i reckon i might need to fill with a little resin before glassing.
there was a patch near the nose on the deck which was unskinned on the early photos but most of the yellowing is near the stringer glue up, there is the odd patch elsewhere though too so glad im doing colour on this one.
i mentioned it to Panis when i rang them this morning to order some pigment but he didnt say too much, i think next time ill ask them which are the freshest blanks and take those, it looks like mine had been sat on a shelf in the sun for a while.
anyhow the only pigment for epoxy they had was yellow. its in the post but Panis mentioned something about other shapers using polyester pigments in their epoxy. he said if you ask the manufacturers they tell you it wont work but people are using it and it works so should i risk it?? i have some white, transparent amber and transparent red. the girl whos ordered these boards wants red but ive heard its a nightmare and gueesing with it being transparent it will be even worse! what do i do???
the girl im doing these boards wanted to watch me shape one and take some pictures for her degree folio, so after work this evening i set the board up, got out all the tools and also set a video cam up. i had an hour tape so wanted to see if i could get this one done before the time ran out. also i didnt want it to be too boring for her!
got it finished in pretty much exactly an hour! finishing shots are of me planing the stringer down then showing her the finished thing. well stoked. so im going to get one of the guys in the video dept to copy it and speed it up tomorow so i can you tube it!
i messed one side of the nose on the bottom a little but should be able to fettle it tomorow night.
then its four days in cornwall surfing before starting the fibreglassing on tuesday next week!
its a dogs life…

today i got my order of resin from seabase but unfortunatly they are out of resin research for a while so i got surf source epoxy instead… even tho i specified resin research! not too happy but im on a deadline so it will have to do. just need to recalculate all my mixing ratios!
been playing with colours and chatting to hayley who they are for and thinking of going with one orange bottom and one pink, a friend is getting me some of her turquiose to try but until i see it im going to concentrate on orange and pink. im mixing white and translucent red to get the pink and white, yellow and translucent red for the orange. the translucent amber is really nice but a bit too bright!
let me know what you think…
oh and the lines are just pencil on the foam to show the opacity.
ken heres the latest progress pics, i started fibreglassing yesterday the cutlap came out real nice so i decided to put the fabric straight on within about 4 hours and did the fabric and inner glass first, wet out well but could have done with a smidge more resin. more about that in a mo.
then i laid on the final glass and freelapped round the rails. i got a relatively clean free lap just a few minor alterations with a razor blade then hotcoated the bottom first thing this morning. its been stinking hot here so by 3 this afternoon i flipped and hotcoated the top so hopefully all my layers will have a chemical bond.
on hotcoating the deck i noticed a few bumps where the fabric has raised slightly, they arent air bubbles and feel hard all way through as if its pooled resin. anyhow as they are show boards im thinking of sanding down on monday and putting another hotcoat on top to help me level off these bumps… unless you have any other ideas??
here goes…
deck masked ready for cutlap
fabric on deck pre hotcoat

I’m loving that cloth mate, looks great. And if there’s no swell you can use it as a picnic blanket.
How was cornwall?
Peace!
your on a roll now!
double hot coat will help
dont be stressed about weight
its overrated
cheers guys, first one is all hotcoated and just waiting for the fabric for the next one! cant wait.
im not going to fit boxes till they are both finished as i want mine to be the singlefin.
all thats left for this one is some more sanding and the pinlines… any tips appreciated but thinking mask off then either spray or posca pen them on.
latest pics…

Looking very shiney mate, mind your wax doesn’t slide right off it.
Peace!
Sand it
Mask It
Poca pen it
gloss it
dont you just hate it when you write a long post then your internet crashes and you lose it!
anyhows ill try again, its been a hectic few weeks with far too many jobs on ive been doing 12 hr days for 3 weeks solid but at last its finally over! things went wrong and i attempted recoveries, i learnt that i should do resin pins in future and i learnt that sealants advertised as krystal klear should not be believed! its yellow!
so below are the photos of the build of the second board, videos to come as soon as ive worked youtube out.
fins were done the day before her assesment so ill have to get photos tomorow night at the opening night of her show! its on for two weeks and im itching real bad for a surf on them!
the next post are some photos a mate took one night in our cellar after the hotcoat. thanks for the wicked shots matt!
enjoy!
