Well this is the first board i ever made. I learned a lot from this and allready have the second one in the works. I used no power tools except for a palm sander and a dremel. I shaped the blank, then moved and had to take it with me, so it got a few bumps, but i fixed them with a little spackle. Shaping was the easy part compared to the glassing. I used UV resin and double six on the deck and six on the bottom. Since i have no garage i proceeded to glass the board upstairs inside my den. I rolled the carpet back and laid down a tarp and painters paper. First mistake, resin sticks to paper, you step on paper, now your stuck to resin and paper. My flip flops are still covered in bits of resin and paper. Bottom lam went allright but when i opened the windows for UV rays the board wasnt kicking. There wasnt a lot of sunlight and not a direct lighting source, so i had to carry the laminated board still wet outside and hold it until it kicked, then bring it back upstairs to do the cutlap. Needless to say i got some resin on the railing and door when doing this. Did fairly good on the bottom though, but didnt bring down the the high spots with the surform enough, so i had bubbles on my laps after it cured. I cut these open and filled them, so they are not very noticeable now. Hotcoat was halfway decent, but had some lumps and bumps. Took as much down as i could without hitting the weave, but i still dont know how you guys get it perfectly even. That was a pain in the ass. Glossed it, but had to sand it to much cause it still had some bumps. Threw a resin loop on and pinlined a design. The lap pinline bled a little, so i made it larger, i dont like it that much, so now i know tape double just to be safe. But the deck design pinlined allright. Thanks for all your help guys, i couldnt have finished it without you. Oh and to my girlfriend too who put up with the smell of poly resin in the house for about two weeks before it finally cleared.
Looks good from what I can tell, but you might try resizing the pics or leaving them as they were and trying to fiddle around with the resolution…Otherwise it appears that your board was shaped by TRON!
Very nice, especially for your first try…My first board is almost identical to yours, color and all…Good job.
Nice…Assuming you did a resin tint (as opposed to airbrush), did you encounter any issues with regards to the tint and UV resin? That is an option I’m looking into right now, but thought I read that tinted UV resin was giving people some grief…
I used tint, but i used a little too much. When i poured it on the lam, especially on the bottom, you can barely see any white. I had no problem with it going off, but you cant make it opaque. On the top i did a little better with a swirl, and i kicked it off super slow just to help it a little since the sun was starting to go down.
I like the nose rocker. Nice and low.
I have done several patches on my skimboards over the years with Suncure that I tinted. I even did dark blue 3 different times with no troubles with cureing.
I would be slightly scare of tring it over a entire board.
Well i christened her today and she rides like a dream. It’s only 5’6" but it catches waves better then some of my bigger boards. I can’t wait to ride it on a nice clean day. A couple people asked me where i got it when i was surfing and it felt cool to tell them i made the whole thing, fins and all. I dont think they belived me, but who cares. Thanks again
