I’m very grateful to all those who have shared their expertise and experiences via this board. I have learned an immense amount about board design and construction. At this point I think I’m going to try my hand at shaping my first board and was looking for input on the choice of what to shape. At 45 y/o and 185 lbs I ride longer and bigger boards
I was thinking of a 7’ 0 or a 7’2” egg shape using a 7’3” Becker blank .
What do you guys think? Is this a mistake should I try something smaller or a longboard perhaps. I seem to recall reading that for your first board keep it under 7 feet because there is less foam to screw up!
If the egg is a good idea should the bottom be kept basically flat, or maybe a little belly in the center or slight Vee out the tail
I have shaped a few killer single fin eggs (from 7’0to7’2.5) for my girlfriend out of that blank. It has some belly built into it, so if you want that, it is an easy blank to shape it with. If you want a flat bottom, it does not have so much belly that it is hard to shape out. Get your blank and have at it!
A mid-length egg is good for your first effort, assuming you want to surf on one. Not too much rocker, not too much foam. I’d recommend you keep it simple and go with a flat bottom on your first board. Remember, measure twice, cut once!
…i don´t know your surfin skills, but a longboard is not as easy too surf well, that many people think…, to obtain a small board type surf, you should try with an small egg or “flying disc” to 6 8 to 7 2 , but with plenty of volume… an a lot of kick tail if your surf is good… a 7 11 is a good all around blank…
