first board

me and my friend were going to shape our first board ( two 6’1" R Clark blanks) and we were wondering how much resin and cloth etc. we should use.

Also we found a website that sells FCS templates to throw the plugs into and im not sure if i should use the template or just use a website to tell me how far from the stringer i should place my fins. The link is http://www.foamez.com/store/productDetails.cfm?prodID=149&prodIDCat=25

Thanx for your help

get the template. the template provides the exact setting for the plugs. quick and easy to set it up anywhere you want on the board.

its so expensive though, why not just put the plugs on the fins, then trace that on? I haven’t used any fcses yet and was wondering the same thing.

yeah that does sound like maybe it could work somehow…never use fcs but maybe you could try marking it all out on say a 2x4 and see if it works the way you want it to…just if your gonna do it on the real thing you dont wanna drill all the way through the deck…if you do thats probally no big deal either …its more about having your fins positioned in the right place, maybe thats what you pay for with the fcs kit? but like i said never use em.

i wouldnt get the template, just get a board with fcs and make a template out of wood or plexiglass, worked well for me but maybe im just cheap

I make my own router templates for Bahne long and short boxes, Futures, and O’Fish’l fins, they work just fine. For just one or two sets you can use an Xacto knife or whatever.

I disagree with the above comment about not going to the deck glass. The guys I’ve talked to (experienced backyard guys) who use FCS say that if you don’t secure the plugs to the deck glass, they’ll fail under stress. And I’ve seen a lot of those plugs with little cracks and salt crystals around them, indicating excessive flex of the plugs, which equals failure in my book!

i diddnt say dont go to the glass, i said dont go through it.
