I want a high gloss look to my first custom board. I asked the shaper what finish he’s using and he said a spray finish. Will this give me what i’m looking for? How does “spray finish” compare to other forms of finishing? Thanks for any help.
Bill, You wanted polish gloss not spray finish, that is the cheap way out. There is a huge difference. Polished Gloss will be a little heavier, but if you want it shine its worth it. Especially on a gun or longboard where wait is less of an issue. Good Luck
thanks one fin
Mike, Can you do a gloss finish over a spray finish or is this overkill? Cheers
one fin, can you do a light polished gloss finish over a spray finish? thanks
I don’t see what the purpose is, I think thats probably overkill. It would not be any stronger and would probably be even heavier. Bill what kind of board are you ordering, short long fish funshape?
7’6 funboard with some nice graphics and colour.
you can wet rub the spray finish thru all the grades then buff it to a nice shine http://www.feraldave.com/sprays.htm
I’ve done spray clear urethane which dried to a beautiful gloss. It got lots of complements in this dull mat-spray finish world. Saved me the whole pain-in-the-arse-polishing job. Sorry, polishing is not my favorite job.
dave, gw,how you guys going? dave you can get a shine with normal spray clear ,but its to soft and scratches real easy and looks real bad in no time …i was trying the polyurethane as well but i found the long dry time a bit of a drama in a dusty surfboard factory…i polish every board i build no comparison for quality… get this i been using this new auto motive product and gettin real good results its called U.POL you can 80 grit a board spray 2 coats on back to back just need 5 minutes between coats drys so glossy its not funny can turn over within 2 hours ,it gets shrink back but no where near as much as other clears …then next day hit it with 320 dry ,then a thinned master coat ,its a 2 pak that takes normal thinners the normal thinners helps it be touch dry quite quickly ,great for dusty enviroments…then after that 1200 the nibs and buff …but watch out if you leave it to long before you buff the stuff goes so hard even your sand paper just skids on the top,i think it comes from the uk they have a web site i think??? hope this helps someone… regards BERT…
