ben tandio,

A couple of suggestions for your next board.Sorry, I can’t help with this one. Measure thrice, cut once. Cut out your template from the bottom of the blank. mike

If it’s 18 inches wide now then practice good control and leave it 18. Losing an inch in width while shaping seems excesive. Mark the wide point of the rail band and don’t sand it off.

Have fun, I’m sure the stoke has been injected, the next one will be even better.

after cutting the shape, draw a pencil line around the rail as a guildline. This is the point where you want your top and bottom rail to merge. You should still see this line when you begin your final sanding. At most you should loose 1/8" from your templated shape.

I would imagine this is a little harder on a short board rail, but this works great for a 50/50 or 60/40 longboard rail.
