First Hand Shaped...

Thanks for all the great tips here on Sways.  Thanks even more to my friend and board building mentor Brent Clark.  This is my 4th build but first hand shaped.  (the first two were cut on a machine, and the third was a blank that had been shaped but damaged)  Brent let me use his shaping bay and coached me through the process.  Blank was a Marko 6’0 pescado.  RR epoxy.  5’6x21x2 3/8.  5 boxes.  You wont find Brent here on Sways, but he is an amazing guy who has been building surfcraft of all kinds for over 40 years.  Over the past few years he has been teaching all his son’s surfing buddies how to build their own boards.  We need more guys like that to keep the art alive!

I Hope you are happy. It’sa really nice looking board.  looks great for your first hand shaped board

Nice and clean, looks like fun!

First hand shape, I’d say the boy has some talent. I like the tint also.

Well Done!

Thanks guys.  My shaping guru insisted on a few things.  Get the template perfect, and cut the template perfectly square to the blank.  In fact he insisted I use a square while cutting.  I was tempted to rush ahead but came to appreciate how a perfectly cut outline makes the rest of the process so much easier, especially when it comes to drawing and cutting the rail bands.

As for the color, I used acrylic paint applied with a sponge brush directly on the blank.  Very easy to do.

Nice looking board.  Would love to give it a spin.
