Hello all! I’m going to attempt to shape my first longboard (after 2 hybrids total). I’ve got a 9’1"Y sitting in the shop out back. I plan on making it 23" wide with a 6" squash or square tail. By the way, I plan on using it at Westport, mostly during the late spring through late fall, ie small, crumbly waves. I’d like to be able to get up on the nose with it but I’m not sure what a good rocker or how wide the nose and tail should be? Also, how thick for someone who’s 170lbs? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Mark “Mad Dog” Pearson
Mark, I made a 9’0" out of the same blank and I love it! I am just learning how to ride a longboard after many years of riding shorys. I’m not much of a nose rider, but the board seems game. Noodle gave me numbers for a killer outline with a 18" nose 23" wide (3’ up from mid ) and a 15" tail. I put in as much rocker as the blank could give me and also a concave under the nose. this board has worked well so far in 1’ to 4’ foot surf. Hope this helps, good luck!! Scott. Hello all! Oops…That would be 3" inches up from center, not 3’ feet.>>> Mark, I made a 9’0" out of the same blank and I love it! I am just > learning how to ride a longboard after many years of riding shorys. My board had an 18" nose, 24" middle and a 15" tail that was pulled back to a 7" square tail. I am about 195lbs and found the board to be a very good nose rider and I am very happy with its over all performance. I surf mostly in Southern NJ and our waves tend to be small and crumbly. It also worked well in some good waves I caught in NC this summer. Good luck and have fun. h2ofxk
Hi Mark, I’m kinda busy away from my program this morning. I think your weight hits the heavier end of a 9-1Y’s scale for a noserider, but still doable. I like your idea of squashing a 6" tail. That will help hold the tail in the wave. I would use most of the 9-4 length of that blank, and use about three inches of mid-board foil. I’ll port some outline and rail dimensions to the bb when I get some time later.>>> Hello all! I’m going to attempt to shape my first longboard (after 2 > hybrids total). On second thought, Wide sterns work well on crumbly waves, but I’d pull in the stern slightly for a little bit hollower juice. Here are some dims for a glassed 9’3"x15"x23"x18" board, center offset 3" forward, and a square 5" tail. Measure from the stern forward, then out to each rail mark. You can make a 6" squash tail by extending the stern outline to the 0",3" mark. Mad Dog, I used that blank for my 9’2" noserider…you can see it on the board forum…the “Lord Hunt” model. This is really a magical noserider. So if you want noserides it’s a good platform. I made it a bit wider than 23" (I think 23.5) and placed that wide point at least 6 inches front of center. I mostly kept the natural rocker in it, but thinned down the tail quite a bit from the bottom(last 16 inches). Feel free to go wider on the nose…I made mine 19.5". As for thickness, I would think anywhere around 3" to 3.25" would be fine. I made the rails 50/50, but they’re kinda knify. For those crumbly waves, it’s good for speeding through mush to make it to the shoulder. Just my view; hope it helps…deeb…
