First Shape.

Shaped my first board this weekend. Actually came out looking ridable. Almost planed through the planer cord though. Nice. Anyone know where to find grit drums for planers. thanks…

Looks good.

really nice

you’re doing it professional for your first shape!

Keep on shaping!

OK, good work.

PU glue almost unnoticeable.

Remember to use EPOXY resin for glassing!!!

Thanks everyone. Def a good time. Now I’m nervous about glassing it. Hopefully it works out.

First time I glassed (it was epoxy) I was super stressed I was sweating all over!

But really, There was plenty of time! You really don’t have to stress, just stay cool and everything will be oke.

I just don’t feel ready to glass yet. The day I shaped that boards I felt ‘ready’. I need to study more. Having some trouble finding a good step by step instruction.

have you checked these sites out?

Hey Deathfrog,

Yeah. I have both printed out. Read them many times. Just a bit hard put it all together. Alot is poly resin too. I’m doing epoxy. I’m guessing basics carry over somewhat?

The EPS/Epoxy Construction Primer has a lot of good info about glassing a board with epoxy. The biggest differences I would say are that you need to let the resin soak in a little more. it’s going to do that on its own time, if you try to push it in it’s going to froth. Try to minimize your passes with the squeegee, it can be tempting to just walk back and forth forever but it doesn’t help. Laps are a little bit more tricky since the resin needs to soak in. Some guys like to flip the dry laps up onto the board and wet them, but that’s never worked for me. I just use a paint brush while I’m glassing and put the squeegee under the lap and paint some resin on. It gets enough on there to wet it, but not so much that it all falls on the floor.

If you haven’t already bought your resin, go for the slow hardener (or if you’re really nervous, the Very Slow hardener), and you’ll have plenty of time. The only instance where 50 minutes wasn’t enough for me was when I was glassing two layers at a time and I hadn’t mixed enough epoxy to cover everything. Eventually you learn though.

Between shaping and glassing, I like glassing more. It’s just a lot more fun for me.

Thanks Rachel.

I’m going to read everything again a couple times. Hopefully have it down by then.

Don’t forget to seal on EPS!

Some lam tips on EPS:

Hans,

Where do you get your materials, I am in Holland and having trouble finding good supplies for EPS shaping. For sealing your core, what microballons you get? Let me know!

Thanks

You’re from holland, take a look at our dutch shapeforum: http://www.surfholland.nl/…wcat/catid,514.xhtml

I’ll tell you in dutch where to get the stuff (I hope it’s permissed)

Kemisol: http://www.kemisol.be/

Standaard lengte: 500mm 1000mm 2000mm 4000mm

Standaard breedte: 1000mm 1200mm 1220mm

Thanks Hans. I actually bought the sFoam dvd and follwed that almost step by step. Worked out well. Wish they had one on glassing epoxy

You’re gut’s telling you you’re not ready to glass 'cause you’re not. You’re next step is sealing. From this point on, I wear gloves whenever I’m going to handle the board. I strongly recommend you do the same.

Although you really don’t need to seal with surfcore foam, as it is a high quality foam, for aesthetics I prefer a 50/50 by volume mix of microbubbles and resin/hardener, with a touch of white pigement, for sealing. However, slightly watered down drywall spackle (with distilled water) works fine, esp. if you’re doing artwork. Do one side at a time, let it dry, then sand very lightly. Do it twice if it still looks too rough.

Don’t forget to use your respirator (or at least a dust mask) when mixing or sanding microbubbles. Nasty stuff…

You can do your art right on the sealed blank, or on the filled lam. Both work fine. I do mine on the blank. If you’re painting the bottom, you’ll loose your shaper’s dots for fin placement, so be sure you do them again over the paint.

Once you mix a batch of resin and spread it on (using a plastic spreader, not a rubber squeegee), you’ll get the feel for the stuff, and won’t be at all intimidated. Be sure to measure as accurately as you can. I use a plastic graduated beaker and measure in CCs or mLs. You’ll be suprised how little you’ll need, too.

Everything cleans up with citrus-based hand cleaner.

I’m gonna glass a board this week, if you wanna watch.

Hey, NJ.

Thanks. Def going to seal. I like it looking all nice and smooth. When were you planning on glassing? I’d def be into watching.

FYI. I looked into DHL for shipping blanks and told George at surfcore about it. He said they are quoting him half the price of UPS. Around $50. Sick!

3XRICK,

aha, the glassing fear!!!

I recommend to wacht some glassing clips around the net.

At HARBOUR, home page, down right corner.

At WATERMANS GUILD.

At AUSTIN,AUSTIN,AUSTIN and AUSTIN

At ROCKDANCE

At SCOTT, pics only.

Some months ago, Hicksy posted some footage recorded while he was glassing a shortboard, using epoxy and a paintbrush. I have it in my HD but 24mb is quite big for e-mail.

In fact, using epoxy resin is way easier than poly: lay the cloth, mix resin+hardener for 1 minute but don’t keep it in the mixing pot (pour it into a wide recipient), then pour half the batch along the stringer and spread it using a paintbrush, cut the laps of cloth and so some relief cuts near tail and nose, wet the rails and hanging laps with the rest of the resin, fold the wet laps. With epoxy you have plnty of time: 30minutes for a first glassing job is allowed. No hurries needed.

That sfoam dvd is about glassing epoxy!
