First Shaping Attempt(s)...Pics

Thanks…Looks to me like they laminate the bottom with a cutlap, then laminate the deck with a cutlap everywhere except the tail, or maybe a tinted inlay and a clear layer over that…

I know it’s your first, so you’ll want to savor it… but I’ll tell you that after a few boards you’ll probably be sanding to the weave to save a few pounds at the cost of durability. I figure if it’s for me, who cares, I’ll just make myself another one – in fact, it gives me an excuse to. That said, I make shortboards and weight matters a lot with those.

Six ounce is very durable in my point of view. My third board was a hybrid with a 6x6 deck, 6 ounce bottom schedule – gloss and the works, and it’s still almost flawless a year and a half later. I’d say 6 oz should be plenty for your fish. And if you want the extra weight… don’t worry, your first glass job with 6 ounce will come out closer to 8 oz anyway.

Ok, you talked me into it…6oz. it is for this one. 6x6 on top, 6 on bottom. Full yellow tint. CHAAAARRRGGGGEE!

Tenover, I don’t know if this is the local company you found for glass, but for anyone in the San Diego area who needs fiberglass cloth, you can get it at Diversified Materials, 8250 Commercial, La Mesa. Their phone # is: 619-464-4111. They have 4 oz., 6 oz., and Volan in 8 oz. Doug

Thanks Doug, that’s the one.

Ok, here’s an update…I know I’m a little slow, but I wanted to try EVERYTHING on this board just for shits and giggles. Here;s what I’ve done since the last post…

  • Hotcoated the bottom

  • Sanded entire hotcoat by hand

  • Made fins and glassed them on

  • Made glass leash loop

  • Did a pinline (not the best, but it works for me)

  • I just got done gloss coating both sides…

Oh, and a thanks to all here who’ve helped me through this…ESPECIALLY those who talked me into doing the gloss coat instead of the “Future Method” (Leed, resinhead, LeeV), that made a HUGE difference…As long as I can get it buffed nice! I’m absolutely hooked.

Tenover, that is one hell of a nice board man. Lord knows you’ve done more then your fair share of research and questioning, and you better think it was well worth it.

Because, from the looks of that board - it was. Beautiful work and stunning craftsmanship from the looks of it. LEAGUES better then my first glass job  Grats man

PS - I’m wanting to hunt you down just so I can ride that thing. It looks insane  Awesome job man

Aloha

Bryan

Also, dont worry about the pinlines, I think it actually looks pretty sweet with the feel of the board. It doesnt look unprofessional at all, very good feel and look to it man

Thanks Bryan…

If you’re ever down here in San Diego let me know, of course you can ride it. I was feelin’ pretty bummed on it after I sanded the hotcoat and everything looked blotchy and dirty. Then I wiped it with acetone and glossed it and Bam! It was “reborn”. I am definitely a proponent of gloss coats…Seems to add a ton of “life” to the board.

Oh yeah man definately  Like I said, the board looks absolutely stunning.

Actually, I have yet to be out in the water - I might tomorrow.

but if you wanna go and show a hawaiian southern boy some spots in SD, I’d be totally down. Lemme know

Aloha

Tenover,

The board looks great. Nice colors. Mike

Schweeet! I like the fins! Too cool. On the polishin thing …do a small spot to see how it comes out then move on. Use a rubber block and no more than 400 grit wet /dry paper to start on that. Keep it wet (I use a sponge and a bucket of water with a drop of dishsoap) while sanding. On the 600 I fold 1/2 sheet twice so that it is abour 3" x 5" and use my palm flat. That gives you 3 sides to use as it wears down. Super job!
