I’d like to Move down from a funshape to a short board- something for bottom turn-off the lip stuff. I am looking at a 6’8 thruster.dims= Nose-12&1/2 width-20&1/2 Tail-15 thickness-2&5/8. It has a higher nose rocker-straighter tail rocker& swallow tail. Pretty thick through the rails. Could this be a good first choice? Too long? something else be better?
me-6’1 215 I surf southern cal beachbreak( usually waist to overhead). been surfing about 3 years. any advice would be great. thank you.
" Surfing is no fun unless you can paddle around, catch some waves, and ride them.
Smaller is great for image and little tykes, who would love to persuade you to ride 6’4" x 19" x 2.45…so they can snake you. "
!!!BINGO!!!
Shortboards are FUN but, don’t be swayed by the “Thinner is better” mentality of the younger flock. Surfing stops being fun when you have to drag yourself through the water, miss waves because you’re having trouble getting into them, and get snaked by all the little water lizards. Give yourself the advantage by adding a little extra width and thickness and enjoy the hell outta it!!!
If you want to go shorter and still catch lots of waves, you can always go wider and thicker along with a retro fish tail. The extra surface area in the tail makes it easier for the waves to push the board. If you’re interested in trying one of these, I can meet you at one of the breaks I surf at (Sunset, Topanga, Leo, Countyline, etc.). I just started a surfboard company geared towards intermediate surfers who want to progress from a longboard/funboard to a smaller board. We have retro-fishes in 4 different sizes. 2 of them might fit your needs. We have a 6’10" dual fin that’s 3 1/8" thick, 22" wide, 17" nose and tail (the orange board below). If you want to go shorter, we also have a 6’2" quad fin that’s 3" thick, 22" wide, and 16" nose and tail (the brown board below). I went from a 7’6’ hybrid to the 6’2" fish and had no trouble catching waves. I won’t have any of the 6’10" ready for a few more weeks but you’re welcome to try the 6’2" that I have now. The other 2 sizes we have are 5’8" quad fin and 7’4’ dual fin. Prices start at $375 and we can ship anywhere in the continental U.S. for $59. If you’re interested, send me an email at sales@9fishsurf.com or go to www.9fishsurf.com.
Nice fish but shouldn’t that have been a pm? Kinda glad it wasn’t cause I got to check out your fish but I’m sure some others will be less than impressed!
Thank you for the great advice everyone! Point taken about having a little extra float. I think I will do a similar length but bump up thickness & width. There is a local shaper I have been wanting to try , but thanks for the offers. If it does not work out, I’ll be in touch
