Back in 1989 when I started out there was no internet where you could learn from other people’s mistakes the way there is now.
Looks like you have enough room between the garage door and that bay window overhang to glass. Open the garage door, set up your glassing racks and drip catch. Hang a couple of those giant Coscto blue tarps from below the window to the ground… Pick up UV additive for your resin. Start about 8AM on a sunny day. 3M ORGANIC RESPIRATOR. Dress and laminate at your leisure, but don’t take too long, some UV is bound to reflect into your area. Remove tarp, with good sunlight the resin will kick within seconds and sandable hard in a few minutes… and smell will be gone shortly after.
Once every few months probably not a big deal Problem will be if you kept doing this regulalry. Sanding is a bigger issue IMO
sunset/parkside/west portal area.
haha amazing! don’t ask me why it uploaded upside down!
after reading the posts I was thinking maybe buy a few tarps and make a little lean to enclosure or hang a tarp down off the front of the house and work between the garage door and the tarp. Do you think it is ok to use the UV additive behind a tarp with some light coming in through the sides and through the tarp material? How sensative is it? When using the UV additive you use that INSTEAD of catalyst? That becomes the catalyst, correct?
I could also just use the setup I already have, on a neutral day not too sunny not too grey. an overcast day. Hmm.
I think the tarp is still a good idea-to keep bugs, debris, etc. out. and also maybe what they can’t see won’t hurt them. Better to be glassing behind a tarp mysteriously than to be outright showing it off in my driveway.
Maybe UV is a better way, faster process…I don’t have all day! I do…but the faster and smoother the better. Get in and OUT!
Thanks for the help guys keep it coming!
cheers

Please show me in my post where I said Poly Resin doesn’t smell.
This thread is pretty pointless anyway. Glassing outdoors is just asking for a whole shit load of problems. Many of which have already been mentioned by our resident experts. But go head on. One sure way of convincing you to not glass outdoors is; for you to glass outdoors. You’ll be looking at one of the most screwed up boards you’ve ever done when you are finished. Lowel
bud knows - use the overhang next to the garage. even with tarps you will still have to work super fast with UV. collect some cardboard boxes and tape them together to put your glassing racks on to catch resin - surfboard blank boxes work great. its best to have a detached work space to deal with PE resin. you will wind up stinking up your house to some degree when you bring it all back inside the garage - it will migrate. might want to tape some plastic over the door to the garage to keep it contained…
good luck have fun!!!
the part where you said “poly barely smells untill…”
perhaps my sentence should have finished with strong.
lighten up!
If the lam is done early in the day, I seriously doubt there’ll be any trace of the smell if the board is left out for a good 4 to 6 hours. Once the resin kicks the odor is pretty much a non issue.
By the way, if you are not going to lam and hotcoat all in one day, make a temporary rack in the garage to set the board on after the lam coat’s done, and cover whatever you use with wax paper before setting the board on it.
Not sure what in my post was erroneous,a down right lie or plain ignorant.
I have an insignificant amount of experience compared to the rest of the guys on here, but I do have common sense:)
I say again, putting the painters sheet stuff on the ground works easy, just throw it away when you are done. If you have a hard time with falling, they even make recycled stuff that is like a brown paper with some sort of plastic in between so resin/paint wont leak through and it isnt slippery, or use an old tarp.
Glassing outside is a bitch, you will get stuff in your lamination. Then again who cares, I am sure people have done it outside for the past 100 years and were successful.
I had originally tried to use poly, but I live in an urban area, and for residential neighborhoods, it stinks. If you are just doing one board here and there do it in the garage, leave it open enough to have a fan vent the air out. I have tried doing repairs in my backyard, and the smell will creep in through any open window. Any backyarder I have talked to has had the same problem with glassing with poly in residential areas.
If it is just one board, fuck it , it isn’t a big deal. If you are going to make a lot find a better option.
Sorry ahead of time, I am cranky
Used to glass under a tree in Hawaii. Floor was grass. Raked it up when the resin kicked. Got a few bugs but told them we had spent hours catching them and carefully placing them in the lam for authenticity. We built them and rode them. Cosmetics were a non issue.
Outside glassing requires thinning the resin.
Use lots of catylist to thin it out.
No, don’t do that!
Just joking. HAHA!
If it’s just one board, fuck 'em.
It smells better than any cigarette.
If you are worried about the fume smell,
buy some of that Orange additive.
your neighbors will think they live next to a Orange grove.
An open gallon of Poly doesn’t stink anymore than Epoxy until it is catalyzed and then of course it stinks to high heaven and will knock you out in an enclosed room without a respirator. Anyone who says Epoxy doesn’t smell is full of it. Like I said; show me in my post where I said Poly doesn’t smell. Talkin’ shit off the top of your head like Obama. Lowel
. What a bunch of shit. No amount of tarps will keep out UV Rays in a driveway. Can’t believe anyone would EVEN suggest using UV oudoors.t
My last glassing/repair shed was outside. I strung a big tarp between some trees for shade and debris cover, and built a platform underneath it out of 2x4s and plywood. Never had to worry about neighbors and fumes. Three acre house lots are minumum in my town. So, I was basically out in the woods.
Hi, I live in SF near the Zoo and have glassed outside in a shed with poly and even that is pretty smelly from inside the house with the windows closed. It only works on sunny windy days like today with UV cure poly. If you want to avoid the train wreck of 1st time glassing-pissed off neighbors-catalist going off on a 9’+board by yourself ect… Use epoxy for this one and use your poly for ding repairs.
I have some Resin Research Quick Kick that you can have for Free if you want. I like the 2020 RR better and have a lot of the Quick Kick to use up. The only thing poly resin does better is mix with color pigments without turning to brown mud. For a 9’6" your going to need more than two hands to get it done without a lot of stress. I may be able to give you a hand if your not in a big hurry. Here is a picture of a friend I helped Glass his #0002. It got run over by another friend last week–the fins hit it hard enough to launch him off his board. Not a scratch with epoxy+9oz rail tape.
Good luck,
Ian
I think you should take lavarat up on his offer. Makes since to me.
That is a very generous offer by lavarat. I’d accept if I were you.
Plus One in the Lavarat deal.
