my friend and I are going to try to make monstrousity #1. We are both speed freaks and were wondering what ingredients would you do to make a board as fast as possible?
Thin and long. Look at some of the templates for Guns.
I dunno, a gun for #1 seems a bit presumptuous… granted, the fact that they’re heavy is a big plus, because you’re first board (if you glass it yourself) will be heavy. But a gun is a very specific design that has been optimized and leave little room for error, and if you use your gun correctly (i.e. big waves) it’s going to punish you bad for every mistake you make.
I think a hybrid is the best to start with, or a fish… something where a few extra pounds don’t matter, nor does the warbles, assymetry, mis-measurement, gouges and thousands of cosmetic flaws that it will have. After a awhile you can still keep “Ol’ #1” around and give to friends that want to learn to surf. Both are fairly fast, granted a hybrid isn’t an over-achiever, but you can pump them, or trim, and if you put some rocker in it they can handle just about any wave from 1-15’.
I tried making a mini-gunn style board for my first, I’ve probably used it less than a dozen times. Second was a modern fish, third a hybrid… I use both of them all the time.
Depends where you live and what time of year you are shaping.
My #2, a orange and yellow 8’7" x 19, saw prolly 10 of my 35 days surfing that year at the local beach 3 blocks from my house. Prolly shoulda used it at least 5 more days that stretch.
Poster wanted FAST. Funboard are fun, hybrids are easy, …but not FAST.
Well, the truth is, no amount of info will help you for your first board, it will be an abortion at best. So, instead of trying to actually design something that you are incapible of following up on, just try to get something that can be glassed and hope for the best

Basically, your first board and suceeding boards
you should have a board in your shaping bay that your trying to copy. Go the copy route.
My vote goes for a pintail or baby squash Fun Gun shape about 7’8" or so, depends on your specs etc.12x21x13x2/34x7’8". Take the 7’11"R and flatten it out in the nose. Bottom looks like: Flat bottom nose to a slight concave where the front foot stands, double barrel vee or a plain vee out the tail. Make it semi-corky with Brewer down turned rails, about 2 3/4 thick or so. It will run like a bat out of hell, but you won’t be doing any slashing but you’ll be dragging a hand trying to keep the board from running out on the flats. Good board with a little more than the typical Hybrid.
It depends on your waves? if you got mush, you don’t want this board, unless you got sizeable mush.

Abortion is the most horrendous word that I know of.
Think about it.
As to your argument, it can also sustain Terrorism, War, and

Yes my good man, I seem to have gotten carried away with my assumptions…On second thought, a 7’11R skinned, with a perfectly flat bottom is a fast board too…lot’s of squirt. Paint it green and call it Frankenstein. Put a flower on it and call it Rose Bud.

the first board i shaped for my daughter was from a 7’9E. what a fantastic board.that was 7 yrs ago …pintail w/full nose…has been loaned and borrowed alot and always comes back eventually with positive comments.

Fastest boards have flat rocker, square or swallow tail, flat bottoms, turned down rails. Generally a fish has all the elements for speed.
I don’t know what width or length is fastest, but I would guess long and narrow but with a wide tail?. And don’t put fins on it, they will just slow you down.

And parallel rails (esp. in the rear half of the board).
That’d be one weird board (s’pose it’d be a big bodyboard)!
It’s a hard question for most people to answer since most of them don’t know how fast they have gone. A method of measuring speed will enable you to ake your own experiments and record the results. There is more than one way to go fast. Regards, Roy
