First winter as a shaper : (

Hi all,

I’ve been looking forward for the winter for the nice waves, and the less crowdedness, but I’m starting to realize as an aspiring shaper that winter sucks. My first 4 boards that I built in september & october, I would ride for a week to better understand how my shapes worked, then sell them for the price of the material. I used to get som many responses from interested buyers (mostly beginners) , and usually sold my boards right away within a day. This gave me the cash to get my next blank, cloth & resin. But here we are in December, and the demand for surfboards has plummeted. The classifieds are buried with surfboards for sale, but not a lot of buying. Anybody experiencing this? how do you survive the winter as far as making boards? It’s not like I’m asking for profit, I just want to keep practicing this wonderful craft. Has any one stocked an inventory during winter and sold them successfully when Summer came? An ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

depends on where you are and what kind of boards you are trying to get rid of. if you are in the so. cal. area, ill be managing the huntington beach play it again sports this winter and i can definately put your board on the rack where the turn over on our boards is hardly ever more than 2 or 3 weeks, if that. let me know if you’re interested/

yeah i guess im having a little of the same problem…the thing about winter i guess is i like it cause theres usually some pretty good waves ,and not many people out…good for surfing / bad for selling boards i guess…i guess some people dont like the cold…i just like the waves…x-mas is coming maybe somebody will get a board.? …and im shure if you can afford to make a few over the winter, then they could sell a lot quicker in the spring when the crowds hit the surf even when the waves suck…
