I’m wondering if somebody can tell me how the performance characteristics of this board will change if the dimensions are changed as follows: Length: 6’4" wide point 20" thickness 2.5 Scenario #1: Nose 13.5, tail 13.5 Scenario #2: Nose 16, tail 16 What does the wide nose and tail do to performance - what are the pros and cons of a wider nose and tail. NOTE: the tail will be a drawn-in swallow (i.e. with wings). I ride a 6’10" thruster normally and am trying to shape a board for weaker smaller conditions i.e. 1’ to overhead. I’m 5’9", 175 THANKS!!!
For the purists: Just used the term for ease of reference. Thanks
The wider nose and tail will work better in slow/smaller conditions because it will plane up sooner then a narrower nose/tail. SteveA
A wider tail will be looser and will catch more of the wave’s energy when paddleing into a wave. With bigger surf though you might have to baby your bottom turns more. You could lessen that with the drawn in swallow tail you were talking about. If you did this with the 13.5" tail you might make the board a little too stiff. I guess it all depends on what kind of characteristics you are looking for. I just did a board from a 6’2"c that is 6’2" 14" nose, 20" wide (1 3/4" back from center, and a 16" tail. With a flat entry rocker. A rounded squash tail. It goes great in mushy surf, fast and loose, but in bigger surf (overhead +)it does not work very well, if I bank a hard bottom, the tail wants to release. Even with different fins setups it still wants to do it. But I didn’t really make it for bigger surf. With a wider nose you have to watch out for it catching on re-entry and even on some cutbacks. You might want to consider the 13.5 nose with the 16" tail drawn in with the wings and a swallow. It might be what youre looking for. Hope some of this helped.

YEA THE WIDER TAIL PUMPS AND IS FAST AND A WAVE CATCHER, BUT FORGET THE SNAPBACK CUTBACKS, YOU’VE GOT TO DO MORE OF A ROUNDHOUSE STYLE CUTBACK, PINCHING IN THE TAIL VIA DOUBLE WINGS LAST 12" IS MY REMEDY FOR A 15-16" TAIL TO TIGHTEN THE CUTBACK ARC.
