Fish stringer

i need some tips on how to reduce the tail end of a stringer when shaping a fish with a deep swallow tail in it. ive only shaped 1 board before ( with a round tail) and i am anticipating some trouble getting the stringer down. if anyone has some tips then i would really appreciate it.

a round microplane surform a stanley will work but a microplane brand very very nice at same or cheaper price

Try searching the forums with “butt crack”

Do a search, but essentially:

  • Round surform or coarse file

  • Stanley knife

  • Coat hanger wire wrapped in sand paper.

When you are working on the stringer lay some tape on the foam to protect it. Mike

I use a Japanese tool that’s available from bonsai nurseries called a side branch cutter to nibble away at the stringer which can be finished off with sandpaper wrapped around a piece of dowel.

My way is best. Go to the hardware store and buy a coping saw. Very thin blade. You can cut the swallow and the hard edge of the but crack. For the butt crack, do several succesive cuts to round off the angle of the stinger.
