Newbie here. Just got a Clark Foam Fish blank, 6’0", now any ideas on where to get a great template? Any sites? Grab from someone at the beach? Will any surfshops let you copy one?
Thanks,
BB

Try and find a buddie’s you like, and copy that one or build your own template.Shops aren’t very willing to let you take lines off there boards for various reasons.Herb
Just go in the shop and start tracing it, the worst they can do is tell you to stop. But from talking to people in the shops, usually kids, they dont really care.
I have to admit that I once went into a shop and traced the nose of a Takayama speed shape because I was burnt out after my 50th attempt to get the same outline with my template stick. This may be sacreligious to some. I find it funny now, because it didnt really look the same anyway.
Saw your post and remembered seeing this:

I think this templete is a bit bigger - but I’m sure you could work with it…
I wrote a a bit bigger - I meant a bit smaller…
I’ve been making some sanding blocks - maybe I’m high on contact cement.
If someone at the factory tries to take a template i give them a hard time and let them know it’s stealing
Nathan, thanks for the cool fish specs. I really don’t want to go into a store complete with tape measure, penicl, paper etc. I have some friends that I can grab a shape from but I want to start on this project tonight and I CAN with your specs. I have a 6’2" blank. What do you think for widest width? 21-22 inches? Thanks again.
BB
Oh, that spec sheet is for a 5’5" fish. For a 6-6" fish, are each width pinpoints the same? I should probably stretch each section an inch longer??
BB
sorry, typo. for a 6’0"-6’1" fish.

When I want a starting point on a new shape I usually try to find a good representative picture of what I am after. I put it on the copy machine and zoom(enlarge it until I get to the legnth I am after @ 1" = 1 foot.) For your fish enlarge it to 6 inches. Now it is to scale. Mark it @ 1" nose and 1" tail and approximately 3" ahead of center (1/4" on your scale drawing. That will approximate the widepoint on most fish templates. Now measure the widths of your copy at the marks and multiply by 12 to get your actual dimensions.
Example: Copy widepoint is 1.75 inches.
1.75 x 12 = 21 your actual widepoint will be 21"
Copy 12n measures 1 and 5/16ths (5/16 =.3125 +1 = 1.3125)
1.3125 x 12 = 15.75" …nose width @ 12inches back…
Get your waypoints and make your template with a rod or wood strip by bending through your points of reference.
Sounds complicated but I think you can figure it out. It works very well. There is scaling info in the archives that Herb and I and several others have posted
Good Luck!

Boondockbill -
In previous threads, Greg Loehr has recommended adding 1/8" in width for every inch in length.
so if a 5’5" fish at the widest is 21", then a 6’0" at the widest, would be 21-7/8"? Makes sense…
BB
Yes - that would be for the wide point. You’d also want to scale up all the other width measurements as well.
Suppose it was widened up to the max of a 6’2C blank? like 24" at the widest point? I know this is a classic board and the subtleties of its design are probably beyond my comprehension, but my gut feeling is that I want it to be wider. Still tapering to about the same width at the tail. This is in reference to the spec sheet referenced above. Maybe I am looking at it with a modern template in the back of my mind? I wondering what the board would ride like with that change.
…if you excess the wide you finally have got a board that only surf with the bottom…, and that ´s is bad…this is the big problem for ssome women…, they are smaller for that bigger boards who rides…
But then if I widen it 1/8" for every added inch in length, where do I put my check marks? On the 5’5" sheet it starts at the bottom then in 1-foot increments up to the 5-foot increment. Then it’s 5 inches beyond that. If I use the same on the 6’0" then it’s all messed up. All the numbers will change.

I just went ahead and sketched the template mentioned above (for a 5’5") even though my blank is 6’1". I just extended the rear lines to compensate for a larger board. But the rear line is only 10-1/2". Question. Can I now just go all the way around the board, let’s say, 1/4-3/8", with pencil to adjust it better to a 6’0"? The rear line will then be over 11". BTW, right now my widest point front-of-center is almost 21". Can I go 21-1/2" or even 22"?
BB
okay, so if you printed out the info for that 5’5" Fish. just take the solution for this equation 5’5" * X = 6’0"
then take “X” and multiply it by all the dimensions on that printout, except angles. and there you have it.
so “X” ends up equalling 1.125. Which means you need to scale a 5’5" board by 1.125 in order for it to be 6’0". so multiply all the numbers by 1.125 and your good.
