I have an old Dyno fish and recently I had the chance to check out a Brom fish. Is there anyone else in SoCal currently shaping fish boards? I noticed that the Brom board and the older Dyno fish had slightly different takes on the same concept and I would therefore like to check out a few more boards before trying my hand at it to see how other folks are doing it. From the message threads I gather that Skip Frye is not shaping fish right now. I recall a message from a few weeks ago relating to a guy in Ocean Beach named Rich Pavel - anyone know if his shop stocks twinnies in the 5’11 range? Thanks in advance.

I believe Pavel’s brand is “Choice” and I think they sell them at the Malibu Surf Company but not sure where else. I saw Brom’s boards at the Beach House in Santa Barbara and really liked them.
Tyler, Murphy. I believe Pavel’s brand is “Choice” and I think > they sell them at the Malibu Surf Company but not sure where else. Board was advertised as near perfect condition and I think that it went for around $375 to $400 (much lower than the $700+ off the rack).
Rich Pavel is down in Ocean Beach, San Diego. his shop is called the Green Room and it’s on abbott street right by the water. anyhoo, he makes a mean fish, and the last time i was in there he had quite a few in stock. GO CHECK EM OUT!!!

Did you ride the new Brom Fish is the $64,000.00 question. And not just once!
Did you ride the new Brom Fish is the $64,000.00 question. And not just > once! And the $64K answer, of course, is no. Unfortunately, I have never had the opportunity to ride one and therefore I can’f offer much in the way of a meaningful comparison between the Brom and the Dyno.

T-Roy, Go by Mitchs in Solona Beach and/or La Jolla. They have Stu K./Tudor fish in stock. They look good, but I’ve never ridden one personally. Fish Masters I can personally recommend: Rich Pavel (619)222 3333, Larry Mabile (858)549 2073, Tom Whitaker (949)361 2203 @ Bashams Glassing.
Many shops are stocking their version of a fish surfboard my advice is to try and find a board that has the rocker and thickness as an old fish but with a slight modern line in the design. Most fish designs wouldn’t float me 190lb. but my 5.10" Dyno’s will as well as my David Nuuhiwa Dyno 5.10 1/2" twin fin fish boards. I asked my brother Herb Spitzer to design me a couple of fish surfboards that ride/shake but also paddle better that the old Dyno’s that I own, he came up with a 6.4" 22’ wide 3" thick twin fin that catches waves and paddles back out better than my Dyno’s And Catching Waves Is What it’s All About! When I surf San Onofre or Bolsa Chica, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach I catch as many as most longboarders will your fish do this? And when I catch my wave I fly over the flat spots off the top shate off the bottom with roundhouse cuttbacks that pick up speed instead of lose speed, futhermore the board can be spun out in a 2’ wave but will hold into a 8’ face if needed. A photo of this board and my Dyno’s and a Quad fish are in the photo section take a look. The reason why i write this is to help all fish riders and shapers to help the design perform better in the crowded conditions that most surf in. It’s no fun having a cool fish surfboard but not being able to ride any waves due to longboarders and younger surfers catching most of the waves …Ask anyone that knows I catch mine and Iam not even in the shape I once was in Iam 41/42 now. So shapers when you make that 6.1 by 2 1/4" thick fish remember it won’t float my generation who want to ride it. I’d love to see more fish riders in the water this includes the 40 plus age surfers …So get something like I mentioned for this summer and leave the log home somedays and come get the thrill back into your life again, if you have any questions about my design ask my brother Herb he’ll answer anything you ask …We’re not in it for the money only for the surfing.Aloha …Ray in Long Beacg via Imnperial Beach.
