FIXED BROKEN BOARD - Thanks Sway's

Swaylock’s Rock’s!

I finally fixed my broken longboard. I broke it a few months ago and have been surfing my other boards. In the mean time I’ve been gathering tools and working on it bit by bit.

The board is 10’ x 3-3/8". I weighed it before and after. Starting weight: 19.54 lbs. Finished weight: 20.78 lbs. Added weight: 1.24 lbs.

It definitely has some scars but I’ve had it out 6 or 7 times now, so I guess it’s sound. I tried to replace the pinlines but wound up sanding through them. Here are the before and after shots.

This bulletin board is awesome. Special thanks to Doc & Neira.

Nice one Ryan!

Is that the same board you mentioned at the cerritos workshop? Do you have any pics of the process, or just a description perhaps? Funny you just posting this today, I picked up a broken longboard at the lane yesterday. This guy said that his leash broke and it ended up on the rocks as it was a pretty high tide. The fin boxes (it’s a 2+1) are totally smashed up as well (it looks like he stepped on the fins out of frustration, rather than rock damage.) Striking how similar your before pic and the two halves in my front yard look though.

Other questions…

What type of foam was the board? What type of glassing schedule initially? What materials did you use to repair it?

Thanks!

Pat

Woa! I guess I exceeded something with ProPicHosting. I’ll get that fixed and get everything back up. My bad.

Thanks Pat. I got pictures of every step. Let me fix the ProPic problem then I’ll get back to your questions.

Ryan

Hey Pat,

I got the pic problem fixed. All better now.

The board is Clark foam with a 6+6 deck and 6 bottom. I used 6 oz glass with Lam, Hot, & Gloss resin, Cabosil, Q-cell, Gorilla Glue, Poplar wood, pigment & tint.

I fried the HarborFreight sander I bought. Piece of crap. It only made it about 2/3 of the way through this project. It burned a circuit on the speed controller. I can see where it burned. Replaced it with a Makita 9227CX3. It’s mo betta.

You think my post is funny? Your’s is funny too. My next project is my buddies 2+1 that he snapped the tail off of and tore out the center fin box and a good size chunk of glass and foam. I’m about half way through that one. Sounds kinka like the board you found. What an idiot, kicking his fins off.

This break fix was drama for me. It’s seared into my memory so ask anything you like. I got pics and memories.

Wow - nice job, Ryan, nice work.

doc…

Thanks Doc. I appreciate it. Your input was very helpful in getting my mind going in the right direction.

Pat,

Here’s the next project. He didn’t kick out the side fins but he still did a pretty good job on wrecking it. Notice the big chunk of foam that got tore out with the fin box.

I’m a little more than half way through this one.

And it surfs good too - nice meeting you Saturday at San O, Ryan. Thanks for introducing yourself even though I was wearing a Raiders shirt and probably looking like a morning grump. You did a great job on the board…

Aw shucks, Thanks Benny. To tell you the truth, being pretty new to the this repair/building thing, it helps to have someone else look at it and say “nice job” because I see and remember every screw-up and frustration along the way. I’m diggin’ it though. Gaining experience little by little.

See, I’m not repelled by the Raider jacket because I’m one of the civilized Raider fans also. Few though we may be.

It’s was great meeting you and the rest of the Sway/longboard folk. That balsa compsand was beautiful. Craftsmanship always shines through.

It was pretty amazing that so many people came from so far to gather and talk about boards. Very cool, I thought. Good waves and comfy water too. Especially for San-O. It would be cool to see a list of where everybody came from. I know there was Virginia Beach, Puerto Rico, Oakland, Santa Cruz, and others.

Here’s a little memento of Benny coming to the rescue with his traveling epoxy ding repair kit. He had that Bing Gold Standard back in the water in no time. I hope you don’t mind me posting your face (or the side of it) on Swaylock’s.

No problem - with that photo I’m even more incognito than usual

All those places plus Philly, Jersey City, Galveston TX, Pacifica, Malibu, etc… we’re truly inmates of the world asylum…
