I would like to convert a couple of longboards fins and put a little flex in them . I assume I remove the appropiate amount of material, to acheive the flex I want . After sanding down the fins , what kind of protective finish do I coat them with ? Acrylic spray can stuff ? Can I just fine sand them and no protective stuff ?
It may be more than just sanding thinner. Flex is also part of the material the fin is made of. Eaither way, its just a fin. Finish sand to 400 works, you can spray on a clear coat. You can gloss it with resin.
Maybe a more interesting thread option, is go do it first and then tell us what you did.
James, I have a 9" flex fin laying around somewhere. You can try it if you want. Otherwise a rattle can of clear coat will work. I’ve been using stuff from a NAPA store on Waialae Ave. Costs about $6.00 and it has a nice even gloss finish. I use that on my surfboards for the final coat on the rails.
I think the flex fins have a sanded finish. You could just sand down to 600 or 1200. I go to wet sanding at 220, then up to 1200 for a smooth finish.
Also another Sway’s friend from CA is coming over in early April. You want to try to hook up and surf? I’ll only be able to go on the weekend because work has gotten extremely busy. Another Sways guy was here last week, but we never got together. I haven’t gotten much surf lately.
You want north winds for Ewa, but anything with more north in it will be OK. The coastline is almost due south there.
If I surf tomorrow, it will probably be at Diamond Head with all the others. Don’t plan on going to Ewa tomorrow. The waves look like they are very small right now, smaller than when we surfed at Ewa.
Les Waddle is coming in April. Les is from Monterey. He said he may go to see Charlie Price who also lives in Ewa. Charlie is a really cool guy, and he builds incredible compsand boards. He’s the guy who taught my brother and I how to do it. Maybe you and Les can surf out at Ewa if you’re still off on the weekdays. Les has a way of bringing the surf everytime he comes. Always been head high or better when he comes down.
Hey Les, you got a special Mana. I think it’s your positive and go for it attitude. Going to be nice seeing you again. I’m glad your enjoying all the barefoot running. You should try to find a way to time a trip here with one of the races they do and have a kiosk at the pre-race events. I bet people here would be open minded enough to get into it. We all grew up here running around barefoot. I think a lot of people can relate to barefoot running sandals.
