Flexy keels...Bad Idea??

Hello everyone, It’s been a while but I have finally begun brainstorming for my next project.

I am working with some strange materials for fins which are giving me a pretty flexy result. Even in an 8" base keel fin there is a nice flex on the tips through the mid section.

My question is would there be any benefit or negative result in having flex keel fins? Double foiled running 0 degrees no cant. I know it will probably have a huge turning radius, but I would love to hear what comes to mind for those who know better.

I hope this sparks some interest.

Thanks for your help,

Rich

i’ve been wondering this too. Using only wood for my keel fins makes them very stiff. I’m thinking it will give the board a more springy ride and you’ll be able to feel it a little more.

what kind of material are you using?

have made some flexible ones out of a fin panel made of layers of bamboo veneer. they work really good!

I had thin fibreglass glassed on keels on my first fish. Unreal feeling. No surprise the keels on my current and foam timber composite and also glassed on. Stiff at the base with a bit of tip flex. Awesome imho

I LOVED the thin cutaway ones I made !

so … what ‘mystery’ material are you using , suemi ?

  cheers

Its not mysterious haha, its this really heavy water resistant japanese paper with some fabric. Who knows they may snap in a second but the fabric seems pretty strong once its wet out and cured. I have only been sampling the materials and have yet to complete a fin. it looks promissing but sounds terrible

I agree with you grasshopper, plywood keels are irreplaceable. I just work with materials relating to paper mostly and i love it. Knowing what i know i figured id try and apply it to what i don’t. Maybe something canbbe born from ignorance.

your fins are beautiful BTW.

do you have any photos of it , please suemi ?

oneula offered me some printed rice paper for fin inlays , is why I am interested …

  cheers !

not plywood. bamboo veneer with fiberglass between each layer. at 7 layers it is pretty flexible. got the idea from ‘wildy’ on this forum.

plywood fins are very stiff.

good luck with your ‘paper’ fins!
