I’m a Brit surfer living in Rio, Brazil and will be spending 10 days in Orlando in January from the 15th-25th. Can anyone help me out with some local info on the place. Is it likely to be any good in january? Can anyone recommend a place to rent a suit and board that won’t cost a fortune.
I’ll be in Disney with the family, if you hadn’t guessed, so is Daytona my best option for an early morning session while the girls are asleep?
From the Disney area Cocoa Beach is actually closer than Daytona. Tom Nielson's retail store should be able to help you with a board, not sure about the wetsuit. You'll need one, though. Water is already dipping into the 50s.
water temp here in daytona is 68-70. At the worst you will need a 3/2 wetsuit cause the air is cold this time of year. From Disney area Cocoa and Daytona are about the same distant. Here in Daytona the best breaks are Ponce Inlet or New Smyrna Inlet. Thats actually the same spot just Ponce is the North side and New Smyrna is the South side. Also check out Playa Linda. Have fun
The OP is talking about driving over very early in the morning, finding someone who'll rent him a board and a wetsuit, get in a quick surf, then get back to Mouseland before the family heads to the ''parks''. I suggested Neilson's because he might pre-arrange something with them, they're nice guys who might be accomodating enough to meet him at the shop at 6:30am.
new smyrna is probably the best choice? it is same driving time as cocoa (about an hour) and the inlet is touted as ‘the most consistent wave on the east coast’ don’t know about renting a board there though. you will need a fullsuit and the way this winter is going, booties too! sebastian inlet is about 30 mins from cocoa and is probably florida’s most famous surf break - it will be a lot warmer than new smyrna but you will still probably need a fullsuit this winter.
If you fit one of my personals (5'10'' x 21.5 x 1.17cuft 4-fin fish, 6'6'' x 20'' x 1.00cuft roundtail tri, maybe a 6'8'' hull if it gets done before then, haha), you can borrow it. We don't carry any inventory, or demo boards. They go out of the factory quick.
There's plenty of good shops in NSB, and the call to go there or Brevard would depend on swell direction/conditions. If you can pick your day out of the 10 you should be able to get reasonable waves.
also check out surfline.com they have a cam at New Smyrna and Ponce inlet. Deffinately need a full suit. As far as shops over here, you can call Red Dog surf shop, Mad Dog surf shop, If you come this way you can boarrow one of my boards. Got plenty to choose from, some my shapes and a few commercial ones, like Walden CD, Webber Fatburner, 9'6" longboard, 6' mini simmons insperied board, 6' shortboard, 6'6" shortboard, 5'8" fish, 6' DWART, 7'4" funboard, paddle board. But you'll have to find a wetsuit. PM me if what you decide. Going were Mike said is a option also. Sebastian/Cocoa is a good surf area also.
Cocoa is probably an hour, NSB/Daytona is probably closer to 1 1/2 hours from Disney. Either way it looks like you have some nice boards lined up in either direction. I would personally take mike up on the offer to ride the new hull or if he lets you the kevlar fish but that's my .02
Depending on where you are staying around Disney the easiest way to get out to Cocoa Beach is to take either 417 to 528 or take I-4 to 528. 528 (Beachline) takes you right into Cocoa Beach and actually turns into A1A which is the main North-South road along the beach. There is tons of free parking in Cocoa Beach.
A couple good local surf reports for the Cocoa Beach area:
2ndLight has a really active forum and guys post reports and visuals daily, so it’s easy to get a feel for what the waves are doing before you drive over:
