Flying without a boardbag

Dear fellow swaylockians, I have come to find myself in the unfortunate situation of having to take a surfboard on an airplane without a boardbag, which is already at the destination. I only have 2 boardsocks here.

I know that the risk of my board getting damaged is high, but as of now I’m planning on using those 2 boardsocks, pipe insulation and bubble wrap. Is this a recipe for desaster or do you think my board stands a chance of arriving unscathed?

Does anyone have experience doint that?

I know this sounds counterintuitive but , I met a guy at LAX one day putting his board , short board , on the baggage trolly with nothing but a claim ticket and a couple of fragile stickers , he said he did this often and never had a board damaged ,  I have used bubble wrap pipe insulation and a bag and still had dings and the fins snapped off , good luck .

How about something like this?

Now that looks lika a good idea .

I wouldn’t worry about it.  Just be sure you have the # of someone who can do ding repair at your destination.  It might also be a good idea to have the # of a shop that you can rent a board from since yours may be in the shop for your whole stay.

It’s always enlightening to stand at the Gate Window and watch the baggage handlers at LAX or Kahului load baggage and boards.

…hi McDing, if you fly on a budget that is the problem if you fly on big planes like A380 and only one company if the fly have more than one route, an elevator up and down the luggage so no problem with people throwing boards to the truck

I usually rap me board in metel laugh, dip me board in rapidset conkreete, cover with stikgers that say hevie and fragle.

never had a problam yet

Thanks for your comments. That cardboard hexi stuff does look interesting. However, it felt too sketchy and I just got a cheap second hand single bag for a couple bucks.

Last trip to Maui, rented a board, but brought my guitar. Did a Home Depot DIY case…sheet foam for walls/top/bottom, covered with cheap venner type stuff, and all held together with…yep, duct tape. No problems.

Haha!  Would love to have seen a pic of that.  You probably could have bought a cheap case from Guitar Center for less.  Lol!  That’s an mental picture!  Ever go to the Pawn Shop in Lahaina?  I’m giving away an insider tip, but a good place to buy a board and then sell it back when you leave.  Lowel
