Well, what’s to say about foam-center fins?
Then ding easy.
They are real easy to shape but need care to keep them symmetrical.
Foam to make 'em is real cheap ('specially if using cast-off bits of EPS from coolers and what-have-you).
They break easy.
You gotta put plenty glass on 'em and even that’s likely not enough.
It’s easy to grind off the remnants after you run over a rock.
And hey, volan is just a surface treatment on the glass yarn. By itself it is not significant of heavy glass. Search the archives, the chemistry of volan versus silane have been set forth in quite some detail.

This is a common misconception. Too many people mistakenly think that volan=heavy. It comes in a variety of weights, just like silane finish does. You can get volan in weights as low as .58 oz, 1.45, 2.1, and 3.22. Plus, the usual 4,6,8, and 10.
