anybody know where I can get a high density foam stringer to glue into a poly foam blank that I am trying to salvage? I’m attempting to make a little stub thingy, but I need to make the blank wider, so I was thinking one of those wide foam stingers would do the trick…
Vonwessels, where you at
I’m in Santa Cruz - we used to have Fiberglass Hawaii, but they’re gone!
There is a company called US Blanks that have high density foam in many colors.
Or you can make a mold and pour your own?
Fiberglass Supply sells foam kits.
hi ding are you talking about standard pour foam?

Here is the link.
You mix the A & B together and pour it into a mold.
You can get it in 2lb or 8lb.
I buy a lot of things from them.

hi mark yeah i have spoken to homeblown, but they want an arm and a leg for 1" wide foam for stringers!
thanks ding
i will have to try that, i can get pour foam locally
You can even color it with food coloring or clothing dye.
hi,
i gotta think that a bit of glass wrapped around a slice of your existing blank material will easily match the strength of any structural foam contender.
or perhaps two wood stringers on either side of the foam insert?

I got my stringer material at Tap Plastics (several loactions in the SF bay area). They have "foamed PVC" sheets in a bunch of colors. I don't know the density, or more about the material. I think these sheets are primarily intended for making signs, but the stuff works well as a stringer, at least it did for me. At the El Cerrito location, they cut me a suitable rectangle, and only charged for that area... a few bucks.
Just seen this place http://www.allscotltd.co.uk/FOAM/c-1-118/ does closed cell foam sheets. Price seems resonable although the delivery (from Glasgow) could be expensive.

I’d laminate wood on either side of the center foam stringer… some thin red cedar… or even ply would look interesting.
