Can’t stop watching “wizards of water” wich has a segment from burleigh with dane ripping on a fat twinfin in some small surf. I’m waiting for “blazing boards” to arrive next week, should contain some footage of kong. Are there any other surfmovies available featuring these two great power surfers?
Have searched a lot, but clips and photos of these two surfers seem to be hard to come by.
Here’s a link to some video footage of Kong and Rabbit in the Hot Stuff surfboards archives.
Kong doing amazing power snaps in the pocket of big boiling pot at Noosa’s National Park back in the 80’s during a Cyclone swell is still the best surfing I’ve ever seen out there.
When the biggest sets came through and everyone was scrambling Kong was belting the crap out of the wave like it was 2’ not 8’.
I think the short Kong’s Island is featured as a extra/bonus clip on the dvd reissue of Stormriders.
Just downloaded “follow the sun” from surfnetwork, has a short interview and some surfing of Dane Kealoha. Soundtrack was terrible, so much good music in those days can’t beleive they couldn’t come up with something better.Danes surfing is just incredible.
thanks for the hotstuff link, shame those clips are so small.
I grew up in Mooloolaba and Kong would often be surfing near us, he really rips and it was a shame he never won a world title but very glad he has won several masters titles… Mad Wax ( quicksilver ) is a must see if you like Gary’s surfing and also an oldy called ‘Wave of the Future’, think Chris Bystrom did it…also there is some of the most insane Burleigh footage ever on a vid called " the bundaberg rum/ tropico surf masters" or something very similar…I lost my copy but it has the best stuff between Kong and Tommy Curren in dirty but hollow tubes…epic if you can chase it up…also a piping hot vid called ‘Strike Force’ has heaps of Kong Stuff ( some great old Kirra ) and also Astroboys 3 , the astrodeck movie had some kong there too…that should keep you busy for a while…and that place in Kongs Island ( where majority is filmed ) is amazing …epic spot…
Kong’s surfing is just inspirational, what he and dane where doing in the 80’s just makes “modern” surfing look twichy and powerless. Got hold of blazing boards and futurewave/beyond blazingboards, havent sen kongs island yet. Does anyone have a copy of madWax or know where to look?
Scroll down the list of videos on the right hand side of the screen. Near the bottom of the list is a video called “Ulitmate Sessions” by Ira Opper. Click on the link and enjoy.
It just so happens I have a second VHS of “Storm Riders” with “Kong’s Island”. (I bought it on sale when a surf shop here was closing, forgetting that I already had a copy.) Elkerton’s surfing is great, you just have to get past the SERIOUS silliness of this segment - I’ll bet his friends still give him a bad time about it! The rest of the movie’s fun too, a lot of Asia and Southern Hemisphere travel back when these places were pretty empty. (Quote, circa 1982: “Crowds haven’t been invented yet, at Grajagan!” ) PM me and I’ll mail it to you! Val
p.s. I haven’t seen the clip on Mollusk website, but it sounds like it’s from a film called “Amazing Surf Stories” that came out in the mid 80’s. Dane surfing a spot called Supertubes that breaks only rarely. Also Dane is featured ( along with Bertleman and Buttons) in “Many Classic Moments” from 1977, which also has a FANTASTIC Burleigh sequence.
I too have been having trouble getting the link that I posted to work. Instead, try going directly to www.mollusksurfshop.com then on the left hand bottom side of the screen, click on the link for videos. Scroll down the list of videos in the menu on the right and click on the link for the trailer of the film “Ultimate Sessions” by Ira Opper. This seems to work for me, so hopefully it will work for you. If not then I’m outta’ ideas.
“Amazing surf stories” with the dane’s session can be downloaded at www.surfnetwork.com. That’s where I found “wizards of the water” and a few other titles not available on dvd.
“Follow the sun” also by scott dietrich features some great surfing by Dane.
I’ve given up searching for “madwax”, hope they rerelease it on dvd some day.
