Have you used the Gullwing fin in a 2 + 1 setup or is it primarily a single fin?
I have a 6’6" Greenough Design Tri plane hull that has a 2 + 1 setup. Right now I’m using the Greenough Series 6 hatchett fin 8" with RedX side biters. We’re going to Kauai at the end of the month and thought I’d try the gullwing straight tip but wasn’t sure how it works with side fins. Of course I can always remove the side fins, which I will, but I’m still looking for input.
I tried it once on my 9’4" high performance Parmenter LB and I didn’t like it at all.
I also tried the Ben Lexan Keel as a 2+1 on the same board
I used two of greenough’s hatchets on this board as a 2+1 with some success but not as a single with any success,
The gull and the keel seems to work best as a single especially with the loaded dome bottom and wide tail designs of McCoys nugget and Cheyne’s no-nose board. I tried the gull on the no-nose and prefer the keel. They provide alot of torgure to compensate for the rolly bottom and wide surface areas and don’t feel the same at least to me on other board designs. Cheyne would know for shure though…
I’m not sure how they’d ride on a Greenough designed bottom.
Wasn’t he an advocate of the flex fin and high aspect thickly foiled fins for his boards?
While on Kauai you should see Robin Mair and try out his Hanalei Fins red elipticals out on the 6’6" I bet they would fly…
Thanks for the responses. I may actually try both the ST and EX fins. I’ll give you a report when I return.
It’s too bad I caught this damned cold or I’d be able to try them this week. Surf has been very consistent lately. However, I really don’t want a relapse right before we leave. Wah, wah, wah…
